;I#39;m sorry, Madam, but I shall have to charge you twenty dollars for pulling your boy#39;s tooth.;“对不起,夫人,为您孩子拔牙我要收取20美元。”;Twenty dollars! Why, I understand you to say that you charged only four dollars for such work!;“20美元! ;Yes, but this youngster yelled so terribly that he scared four other patients out of the office.;“是的,但是你的孩子大喊大叫,把另外四个病人吓跑了。” /201511/411292。

It might sound like the most unlikely of dating tips. But guys, if you want to get the girl, forget the aftershave and try eating garlic instead. Scientists found the sweat of men who had eaten the bulb smelt more attractive to women. The researchers suggested that women may have evolved to prefer the type of smell that eating garlic - which is a highly nutritious food - produces in armpit sweat, because it suggests the person is healthy. Garlic has antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal properties and studies have suggested it can help reduce the incidence of colds, and even high blood pressure and some cancers.Or, it could simply be that the antibacterial action of the garlic makes the armpits smell sweeter by reducing the density of the microbes which cause the nasty odours, the researchers from the University of Stirling in Scotland and Charles University in the Czech Republic said. Certainly, breath odour plays a crucial role in most social interactions, but human axillary (armpit) odour is also an important factor in intimate relationships,’ the researchers wrote in the journal Appetite.’Our results indicate that garlic consumption may have positive effects on perceived body odour hedonicity (the pleasure derived from it), perhaps due to its health effects, for example antioxidant properties and antimicrobial activity. From an evolutionary perspective, formation of preferences for diet-associated body odours was possibly shaped by means of sexual selection. For the study, 42 men were asked, in rotation, to eat raw garlic, garlic capsules, or no garlic, and wear pads in their armpits for 12 hours afterwards, to collect body odour. Then, 82 women were asked to sniff the odour samples and judge them on their pleasantness, attractiveness, masculinity and intensity. The body odour of the men was perceived to be ’significantly more attractive and less intense’ when they had eaten the garlic in bulb and capsule form than when they (the same men) hadn’t eaten it. The effect only came into play once the men were eating a substantial amount of garlic, the researchers found. /201511/410190。

Better late than never. It took eight months for Republicans to wake up to the fact that Donald Trump could make off with the party’s crown. After Marco Rubio’s clinical attacks on Mr Trump last week, the airwaves are suddenly awash with anti-Trump attack ads. But they are almost certainly too late to stop him. That task will fall to Hillary Clinton. It promises to be a spectacle unlike anything we have seen. America should brace for the strangest contest in its presidential history. All things being equal, the outcome should not be in doubt — Mrs Clinton’s victory. Yet there is nothing remotely equal about America in 2016. All that is solid is melting into air. It was not just the Republicans who mis the Trump threat. Just three months ago, Nate Silver, the guru of election forecasters, stuck to his earlier prediction that Mr Trump had only a 2 per cent chance of taking the Republican nomination. He now puts that at 45 to 50 per cent. That still seems too low. The bookies, meanwhile, give Mr Trump a one in four chance of becoming the next US president. That may also be too low. How could he pull it off? The demography is stacked against him. As a rule of thumb, Democrats are assured of victory if they take 80 per cent of the non-white vote and 40 per cent of the white vote. The first part ought to be easy. Hispanics, African-Americans, Muslims and others will come out in droves to vote against Mr Trump. It is the white vote — and particularly white males — that ought to worry Mrs Clinton. Blue collar whites are America’s angriest people. They feel belittled, trod upon and discarded. The future belongs neither to them nor their children. Mrs Clinton personifies an establishment that has taken everything for itself while talking down to those it has left behind. Mr Trump is their revenge. His greatest weakness is that he has no policies. As Mr Rubio exposed in last week’s debate, the New York property developer has little clue what healthcare system he would substitute for Obamacare, which he promises to abolish. Nor does he have an idea how his tax plan would work. Much like estimates of his personal wealth, Mr Trump’s tax cut would be huge — at tn it is far larger than anyone else’s. That is about it. The same applies to his plans to bring peace to the Middle East. He merely asserts that he would be the best deal maker the region has ever seen. The only subject on which Mr Trump speaks with any detail or fluency is his poll numbers, which he rattles off like a caffeinated auctioneer. But not having policies is also Mr Trump’s greatest strength. It makes him nimble. He can discard whatever Republican orthodoxy he felt obliged to adopt and pivot to Mrs Clinton’s left in a general election. If you want to take on Wall Street — something the country is itching to do — vote for the man who has continually outwitted the banks in his bankruptcy-ridden career. While Mrs Clinton was giving 5,000 speeches to Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley — transcripts that she still refuses to release, by the way — Mr Trump was imposing haircuts on his creditors. Mr Trump may be a “con artist”, as Mr Rubio is belatedly pointing out. But he knows how to make a deal. He also knows what America’s middle classes want to hear. Mr Trump will protect their entitlements, scale down costly overseas military bases and revamp trade deals with China, Mexico and others. The chances are that Mr Trump would still lose in a landslide to Mrs Clinton. Over the coming days and weeks, Republican-affiliated funding groups will air advertisements that feature the victims of Trump Inc. These will include people who paid ,000 to study real estate management at Trump University only to discover it was not what it was cracked up to be. They will feature Americans who tried to find work at Mr Trump’s luxury Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida only to discover the jobs had been taken by imported Romanians. They will also include victims of Mr Trump’s ruthless use of eminent domain — the power of the state to compel people to sell land needed for public projects — to evict people unlucky enough to be living near one of his casinos. You can bet that white victims will feature prominently. Look at how Mr Trump treats the little guy, they will say. His campaign is a fraud. All of which may be true. But they are almost certainly too late to stop Mr Trump’s hostile takeover of the Republican party. Mrs Clinton, on the other hand, has plenty of time to acquaint voters with Mr Trump’s biography before the general election. Do not expect her to hold back. She will mercilessly expose his thin grasp of policy. He does not even know what a “nuclear triad” is for goodness sake. He believes global warming is a hoax dreamt up by China to con America into shutting down its manufacturing. He thinks that Mexico will pay for a wall to keep Mexicans out. When it boils down to it, most Americans would not want such a person in the White House — or so believe the best and the brightest. A Trump presidency is too preposterous to imagine, they say. They may be right on that. But so far in this cycle they have been wrong about everything else. Should we put faith in their judgment now? /201603/429553。

A new study from researchers at the University of Exeter found that short men and overweight women earn less than those who are taller and slimmer. Published in the British Medical Journal, the study involved genetic data from almost 120,000 people aged between 40 and 70. Researchers studied 400 genetic variants that are associated with height, and 70 associated with body mass index. They used the genetic variants, together with actual height and weight, and compared them with information on living and income provided by participants from the UK Biobank. The results showed that shorter height led to lower levels of education, lower job status and less income, particularly in men, and higher BMI led to lower income and greater deprivation in women. Professor Tim Frayling, from the University of Exeter Medical School, who oversaw the work, said: ;This won#39;t apply in every case. Many shorter men and overweight women are very successful, but science must now ask why we are seeing this pattern.;负责监督该研究的埃克塞特大学医学院的弗雷灵教授表示:“不是每个案例都这样,也有许多较矮的男性和胖胖的女性非常成功,但现在科学界必须要问,我们为什么会看到这种模式。”The findings showed that for every 6.35 cm in height resulting purely from a man#39;s genetics, his annual income increases by nearly 1600 pounds. When a woman has a genetically predicted weight that is 12.7 kg heavier than another woman of the same height, she is set to lose out on nearly 3000 pounds in annual income. /201603/431014。
