A modest first step in the right direction. The words of the US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton announcing North Koreas freeze of summit its nuclear activities. The move comes just two months after the death of long-time leader Kim Jong Il and a handover part his son Kim Jong-un. Some observers hope it signals a softening of Pyongyang stanks, but Mrs. Clinton isnt so sure. ;Now,ed States,I will be quick to add, still has profound concerns. But on the ocassion of Kim Jong Ils death,I said that it is our hope that the new leadership will choose to guide their nation onto the path of peace by living up to its obligations. Todays announcement represents a modest first step in the right direction. We,of course, will be watching closely and judging North Koreas new leaders by their actions.;“现在我长话短说,美国仍有深远的疑虑。 This could of course be peer pragmatism on North Koreas part. Last year, the ed Nations warn that the countrys facing its worst food shortage in the decade with millions of people at risk. It suffered persistent famines since the 1990s. Americas 240,000 tons of food aid will go some way towards helping the state seemingly unable to feed its people. And Pyongyangs nuclear freeze could also lead to the restarting of disarmed negotiations with among others-South Korea, the US and Russia, which were abandoned in . So perhaps this is more than just a modest first step.

Well, for a while, it seemed the only direction for Apple was up on the NASDAQ. But the worlds most valuable company has become marketly less valuable in recent months. Well find out whats its earnings look like on Wednesday, but Maribel Aber is live at the NASDAQ to explain to us why investors are anxious. Come back a little bit this morning, Maribel, but was it still off 3 per cent? 3%?Thats right, Ali. More troubling signs for Apple, really. The Wall Street Journal says Apple sent word to suppliers in December that it would be reducing parts orders for the recently released iPhone5. And the reason here--weaker than the expected demand. Report says that Apple cut some orders in half from regional expectations so that really indicates sales about latest smartphone really have been as strong as Apple anticipated. And Apples stock price peaked at about 705 here back in September. Check out this chart here, this morning, Apple is down 3.1 per cent, trading at 504.35 there. Thats a big drop since September about 26 per cent from its peak. And Apples felling a lot of heat from Samsung and other makers of smartphones. Now when it gets to some other tech news here, we are gonna get earnings reports this week from Intel and Ebay. Ebay reports earnings on Wednesday and briefing.com expects Ebay to report earnings of 69 cents a share, so that would be up from 60 cents a year ago. Lets see how Ebays doing. Right now its down about 7, tenth per cent, to 52.32 there. 52.32。And Intel is out on Thursday. Briefing.com is forecasting earnings of 49 cents a share. That would be down from 68 cents a year ago and Intel is up by tenth per cent by 22.11. Briefing.com预测其收益为每股49美分。

Ecology raids the techniques of chemistry生态学里应用上了化学技术。BIOLOGISTS are sometimes accused of physics envy—and there is truth in this accusation. The essential fuzziness of biological systems can never be captured by the precise, mathematically based experiments of something like the Large Hadron Collider. Between physics and biology on the spectrum of fuzziness, though, lies chemistry. And a group of researchers led by Carolyn Nersesian of the University of Sydney has just borrowed one of chemistrys most elegant techniques, titration, to answer a pressing ecological question: how do animals choose where to feed? Titration, to remind those who dozed through their chemistry lessons, is a way of working out the concentration of a substance in a solution. A reagent of known concentration is dripped (or titrated, to use the term of art) into the unknown solution in the presence of an appropriate indicator molecule (for example litmus, in the case of a reaction between an acid and an alkali). When the tipping point comes, and all of the unknown reagent has reacted, the solution changes colour. The unknown concentration can then be calculated from the amount of known reagent used. In Dr Nersesians titration the litmus was a species called the brushtail possum. The two reagents were predators and poisons. In the wild, possums feed mainly on eucalyptus trees. Feeding in trees this way also keeps them safe from ground-based predators, such as foxes. They frequently have to shift from tree to tree in search of non-poisonous leaves, though, because a tree that is being browsed starts manufacturing toxins. Dr Nersesian reasoned that there is probably a measurable point at which a plant becomes so toxic that possums prefer to take their chances with the predators on the ground—and she realised this was a perfect opportunity to do an ecological titration. As she reports in the Journal of Animal Ecology, she attempted to imitate the distinction between trees and ground by giving eight possums the opportunity to feed in either of two enclosures. In one, cover was created with eucalyptus branches and light levels were kept low, mimicking an arboreal habitat. Here, the food was sometimes spiked with cineole—a poison often found in eucalyptus leaves. In the other enclosure, the food was always untarnished. However, no cover was provided and fox scent, in the form of faeces and urine, was scattered liberally around, mimicking conditions on the ground. To start with, when the level of cineole was low, possums preferred the first enclosure. But as the drip of the titration went up, from 0% to 1% to 2% to 5% and ultimately to 10% of the food being cineole, their behaviour changed. It was not quite the sudden shift from litmus red to blue of an acid being neutralised by an alkali, but it was not far off. When the food was toxin-free, the possums spent an average of 40 minutes of every hour eating safely under treelike cover and only 20 minutes in the risky, ground-like enclosure, and that scarcely changed for 1% and 2% cineole. The switch began at 5%, and by the time the cineole level had reached 10% the ratio of time the animals spent in the two enclosures had reversed itself—presumably reflecting, though this remains to be tested, the point at which they change trees in the wild. Though foxes are of recent introduction in Australia (having been brought for sport by British settlers), many marsupial predators, now extinct, were present before the arrival of man in both his Aboriginal and his European forms, so the ecological system of plants, herbivores and carnivores in the eucalyptus forests would probably not have been that different in the evolutionary past. A neat illustration, then, of co-evolution between three different parts of an ecosystem—and of the value, even in biology, of precise measurement. /201301/221409。

Got a job in your searching for another one? You are not alone. A new study from career builder found that 69% of full-time workers regularly search for a new job and 30% say they shop around every week. So why the constant job hunt? Well, there’s easy access online posting other resources. We spoke to Caroline, she’s a career coach with six figure start. Caroline suggests subtly pushing your online profile, put your Linkedin page in your email signature that way youre effectively sending out your resume without the actual attachment. Also doing online search for yourself. You need to be aware what employers can and cant see about you. And if facebook once being the first thing that pops up, you may wanna think about adjusting your privacy settings. Also go ahead and set up an alert that way when your name is mentioned, youll be the first to know it. And finally check out the job boards but look beyond those postings even if a posting is out of date, it can great for research, use requirements listed to tweet your resume and write a stronger cover letter. For top tips, Im Alison Kosik in New York. 201211/208877。

CAPITAL punishment has been meted out in Connecticut since colonial times, when convicted witches were sentenced to death. In recent years it has been used sparingly . Of the 4,686 murders committed between 1973 and 2007, only 66 led to convictions of a capital felony, according to a 2011 study of capital punishment in Connecticut by John Donohue of Stanford Law School. And only nine of the culprits actually received the death sentence. Indeed, the execution in 2005 of Michael Ross, a serial killer who waived further appeals, was the first since 1960. Eleven people are in various stages of appeal on death row , including two who have been there for two decades. “Keeping it without using it doesn’t make a lot of sense,” notes Richard Dieter, head of the Death Penalty Information Centre. Connecticut lawmakers agree, including some Republicans. Earlier this month the state’s two legislative chambers voted to repeal capital punishment. Dannel Malloy, the governor, has pledged to sign the bill when it reaches his desk, perhaps as soon as next week. But Arthur O’Neill, a Republican state legislator, wants to put the matter to the people and has asked the governor to schedule a referendum. He points to polls which indicate that a majority of voters in Connecticut, a Democratic state, support the death penalty. This is partly because of the notorious “Cheshire murders” case of 2007, which is still on the public’s mind. A mother and her daughters, aged 17 and 11, were murdered at their home. The mother was raped; the younger daughter was sexually assaulted. The invaders, Steven Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky, both out on parole, then set the house on fire. Hayes was sentenced to death in December 2010. Komisarjevsky, his accomplice, was sentenced to death in January. Both are still alive. 201204/179650。
