In the peculiar-looking, former cross-dressing Shakespearean actor Benedict Cumberbatch, Hollywood has found an unlikely leading man. Benedict Cumberbatch was in mid-monologue, holding forth on the dangers of the surveillance society, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was meant to be promoting his latest movie, whatever that was (he has been in a lot of them lately). He talks superfast, so that when he paused, the effect was of a train driver slamming on the emergency brakes. ;Why does anyone want to know my opinions?; he asked. ;I#39;m not interested in ing my opinions.;本尼迪克特·康伯巴奇正谈论着政府监控的危害。 He has no idea. There are people out there these days who so love to hear Cumberbatch talk — who so love to watch Cumberbatch exist — that they do not care what he does, as long as they get to observe him doing it. Somehow, along a career consisting of highly interest-ing but generally non-megastar-making roles (most recently, the lead in the B series ;Sherlock;; Khan, the wrathful villain in the movie ;Star Trek Into Darkness;; the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, in ;The Fifth Estate; and the voice of Smaug, the very bad-tempered dragon in the latest ;Hobbit; movie), Cumberbatch has progressed from being everyone#39;s favorite secret crush to one of the most talked-about actors in Hollywood. His celebrity manifests itself in unexpected ways. When Cumberbatch, who is 37, appeared on ;Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,; Fallon noted that more people were waiting in the standby line than for any other guest that year. He was reportedly tweeted about 700,000 times in 2013. Last fall, he appeared on the cover of Time#39;s international edition. Although he has not been a romantic lead in any big films, and although he says he looks like ;Sid from ‘Ice Age#39; ; and although he once declared that ;I always seem to be cast as slightly wan, ethereal, troubled intellectuals or physically ambivalent bad lovers,; there are numerous websites devoted to the subject of his romantic prowess, e.g., ;Benedict Cumberbatch — Fantastic Lover,; a compendium of clips set to Marvin Gaye#39;s ;Let#39;s Get It On,; that has been viewed more than 490,000 times on YouTube. (These are mostly posted by his army of female fans, who call themselves ;Cumberbitches; and who use the hashtag ;Cumberwatch; when they tweet about his activities.) 这是一个视频辑成,配的背景音乐是马文·盖伊(Marvin Gaye)的《开始吧》(Let#39;s Get It On)。 (Cumberwatch)。His appeal is manifest, yet hard to pin down. His name is odd, Hogwartsian, suggesting both an Elizabethan actor and a baker whose products are made with rustic ingredients no one has heard of. Tall and lean, he has an other-century look about him, with his long, narrow face, his mop of crazy hair (he keeps it shorter off-duty) and bright, far-apart, almond-shaped blue eyes that on-screen can play intelligent, ardent, manic or insane, depending on the job. In ;Sherlock,; he looks like the sort of person who has a stratospheric I.Q. and an abysmal E.Q. but is dead sexy with it; at the same time, if you were to remark on his resemblance to an otter, you would not be the only one. When he sat down with a cup of coffee in a Camden pub last November and began to discuss electronic surveillance, the government, his favorite movies, his career, the rabidity of ;Sherlock; fans and how coffee affects him (it makes him talk even faster), Cumberbatch had just come off an extraordinary run of work. ;The Fifth Estate,; in which he perfectly captures the slippery nature of Julian Assange — free-speech hero, treacherous colleague, possible megalomaniac — had just come out. Over the next two months, three more of his films would be released: ;The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,; in which he gets to intone things like ;I am death; in a creepy dragon voice; ;12 Years a Slave,; in which he plays a sympathetic slave-owner; and ;August: Osage County,; in which he has a small role in an ensemble of superstars like Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep.《危机解密》刚刚上映。 The Time cover had just hit the newsstands, and Cumberbatch was slightly freaked out. ;It#39;s one of the more bizarre levels of success,; he said. At first he thought it was fake. ;Someone sent me a photograph of it and I thought, ‘Some fan has got hold of a photo and done one of those neat apps where they impose your head on something,#39; ; he said. #39;”Also, he had had an exciting experience on a British talk show, when Harrison Ford, a fellow guest, emerged from his taciturnity to announce that he loved him as Holmes. This has been happening to Cumberbatch a lot lately, fellow actors declaring themselves fans, such as when Ted Danson saw him through a crowd of stars at a pre-awards party recently and began shouting ;Sherlock!;他不久前还在英国的一个脱口秀上出镜。 在最近的一次颁奖典礼前的派对上,泰德·丹森(Ted Danson,美国老牌影星——译注)在一群明星中看见了他,喊道:“夏洛克”!A few days earlier, he had wrapped his most recent movie, a biopic of the British cryptographer Alan Turing. Cumberbatch talked for a long time about the tragedy of Turing#39;s life and about what has been a series of very intense roles, heavy on iconic fictional characters and real people. ;I am so y to play a really dumb character,; he said. He was born in London, to parents who were in the business — the actors Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton — and had his first substantial part in high school at Harrow, the famous boys#39; boarding school that is the Yale to Eton#39;s Harvard. ;I played the queen of the fairies,; he said. (That would be Titania in ;A Midsummer Night#39;s Dream.;)康伯巴奇生于伦敦,父母都是演员——父亲是蒂莫西·卡尔顿(Timothy Carlton),母亲是旺达·文瑟姆(Wanda Ventham)。 [Titania]。)Later, when he performed in ;As You Like It,; an old alumnus watching the play apparently pronounced him ;the best Rosalind since Vanessa Redgrave.; He went to the University of Manchester and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and then slid pretty easily into work; so far he has appeared in more than 30 films and dozens of television, radio and theater productions. But it was his title performance in ;Sherlock,; which debuted in 2010, that propelled him to a new league. Part of it has to do with the witty, knowing script, with its clever allusions to the old stories; and part of it has to do with Cumberbatch#39;s sublime portrayal of the odd, brilliant, infuriating, charismatic detective. Sherlock-the-character has a fanatic following, with fans who debate every Cumberbatchian movement and every plot twist with the fervor of grassy-knoll conspiracy buffs. Cumberbatch takes care to remind them that though they might well love Sherlock, Sherlock would never love them back. ;I always make it clear that people who become obsessed with him or the idea of him — he#39;d destroy you,; Cumberbatch said cheerfully. Over a follow-up breakfast at the Algonquin Hotel in New York a few weeks later, I started to see what his public life is like. We walked there after a quick trip to my office, in which we spoke to no one but which precipitated three breathless ;Is that who I think it is?; emails from normally phlegmatic colleagues in under five minutes. (He came back a couple of weeks later, and the non-phlegmatic people were gaping in the halls.) In the street we had to move quickly, because crowds form if Cumberbatch stands still for too long. In the hotel, we positioned ourselves behind a pillar, but people spotted him anyway (when they asked for autographs, they invariably asked on behalf of their teenage children). As good a sport as Cumberbatch is, he sometimes finds it a bit too much. Filming ;Sherlock; last year in Cardiff, Wales, he had an awkward interlude when he had to walk from his trailer to his car wearing a costume that, had anyone seen it, might have become a major plot spoiler. When he failed in his efforts to get a particularly persistent paparazzo not to photograph him, Cumberbatch shrouded himself in a hoodie (;I looked like Kenny in ‘South Park#39;;) and held up a sign he had hastily fashioned that said: ;Go photograph Egypt and show the world something important.;即使康伯巴奇这样性格随和的人,有时候也会受不了。 The move was lampooned by the British newspapers, particularly when, to the delight of hundreds of fans massed on the street in London for another shoot, Cumberbatch did it again, this time with signs printed with provocative questions about democracy, government intrusion, journalism and the battle between liberty and security in the war on terror. ;These are very complex questions and very difficult arguments to be very clear about, so to ask the questions is to stimulate the debate,; he explained. He has not done it since, though, he said, ;I felt really strongly about it at the time.;此举遭到某些英国报纸的抨击。 In New York he was visiting his friend Zachary Quinto, who acted alongside him in ;Star Trek,; seeing some movies, going to some museums and trying to keep a low profile. He is currently unattached, and is gearing up for his next batch of work. One question that has excited ;Star Trek; fans is whether his character, who all but stole the last film, will appear in the next one. There is certainly that possibility: He ended the film frozen in a pod and stored away in space. (;That was a stupid thing to do,; Cumberbatch said, referring to Starfleet Command. ;They should have just blown me up.;)现在还是单身的康伯巴奇正在为他下一轮工作做准备。 He pulled a cap over his head and prepared again to withstand the public. He says he has a way of negotiating big-city crowds: ;If you pick a point far behind them they perceive you as not seeing them, and you#39;re the obstacle they have to get around.; For a moment, he sounded positively Sherlockian. ;There is a way of just shadowing through,; he continued. ;The higher the walls, the more dark the windows, the bigger the sunglasses — the more people are going to look. The greatest disguise is learning how to be invisible in plain sight.;离开时,康伯巴奇在头上戴了顶帽子,又一次做好了和公众打交道的准备。 Could it be a coincidence that just as Caroline Kennedy becomes more visibly political – in October she was confirmed by the US Senate as ambassador to Japan – the butterfly tattoo below her elbow appears to be fading and is increasingly hidden beneath long-sleeved Chanel jackets? Kennedy, the daughter of assassinated president John F. Kennedy, will no doubt make an exemplary ambassador but she is well advised to cover up her tattoo – or even have laser treatment to remove it – if her ambitions in politics continue in earnest. Indeed President Obama’s promotion of Kennedy is at odds with the 61 per cent of HR managers who believe a visible tattoo damages a job applicant’s chances of employment. “The influence of appearance goes beyond the hiring process. It has an impact on the perception of one’s competence,” say the authors of an annual study on professionalism in the workplace from the Centre for Professional Excellence at York College of Pennsylvania. (Centre for Professional Excellence at York College of Pennsylvania)的研究人员。The US Army’s proposed ban on visible tattoos (those below the knee or elbow or above the neckline) also implies that they are becoming less acceptable at work. “No one is going to take you seriously if you’re up for partnership and you have a tattoo of a dolphin on your hand,” says Bryan Mayou, a plastic surgeon at the Cadogan Clinic in London. In the past two years, Mayou says, he has seen a 50 per cent increase in patients for tattoo removal at his Chelsea practice.“您打算与人合伙,手上却有海豚纹身,那么就没人会真正待见你,”伦敦卡多根诊所(Cadogan Clinic)的整形外科医生布赖恩#8226;马尤(Bryan Mayou)说。 50%。“Sailors were the original tattoo addicts but now they go across the socioeconomic spectrum. It’s an epidemic, and we now see bankers and lawyers in their late thirties and forties of both sexes coming in because they are genuinely embarrassed by them,” says Dr Nick Lowe, consultant dermatologist and spokesman for the British Academy of Dermatology.“水手是最初的纹身沉溺者,但如今纹身者遍布各个社会经济阶层,它就好比传染病。 “People associate tattoos with drunken behaviour,” explains Dr Amy Forman Taub, a dermatologist in Illinois where interest in removal is up 30 per cent. “In a creative environment like advertising or in Silicon Valley, a tattoo is OK or even expected. But on Wall Street a tattoo would not be advantageous to your career.”“公众常把纹身与酗酒相提并论,”来自伊利诺伊州的皮肤病医生艾米#8226;托布士(Dr Amy Forman Taub)说,该州有意去除纹身者的比例高达30%。 Dr Ben Saunders, a tattoo removal specialist at UK chain Trueskin MediSpa, has a different take: “I see tattoos more as an outlet for compulsive behaviour,” he says. “Celebrities such as Cara Delevingne and David Beckham are constantly adding tattoos; it has become a habit to mark every momentous occasion with ink.”“卡拉#8226;迪瓦伊(cara delevingne)以及贝克汉姆(David Beckham)这类名人总是不断纹身;他们习惯于用纹身纪念重大事件。”Last year the British Academy of Dermatology reported a third of people regretted their tattoo, which has led to new laser technology to remove them. “Lasers put out an ultra-fast pulsed width of light that you can actually hear hitting the skin,” says Frank D’Amelio, chief executive of Ellman International, a company that makes lasers for tattoo removal. “The shock breaks up the ink into small particles and these fine particles are removed through the lymph system.” Anything from three to 15 sessions are required, costing from #163;150 a treatment, depending on the size and colour of the ink.“激光发出超快脉冲光去除纹身时,都能听到打磨皮肤的声音,”专门生产去除纹身激光器的埃尔曼国际公司(Ellman International)的CEO弗兰克#8226;达梅利奥(Frank D’Amelio)说。 “The toughest pigments to remove are yellow, blue and green,” says Dr Roy Geronemus, director of the Laser and Skin Surgery Centre in New York. “But I am seeing a lot more successes with PicoSure treatment.”“最难去除的颜色是黄色、蓝色及绿色,”纽约激光及皮肤外科中心(Laser and Skin Surgery Centre)主任罗伊#8226;格罗内穆斯士(Roy Geronemus)说。 The PicoSure laser, launched in April, may be paving the way for quicker tattoo removal but such advances in technology are also having an adverse effect. “Generation Y have a much more transient view of tattoos because they think they can easily get them removed,” says Catherine Cottney, senior trend analyst at Mintel. “They don’t realise how expensive and painful it is.”“年轻一代对纹身持暂时性观念,因为他们觉得纹身能很容易去除掉,”英敏特(Mintel)市场趋势高级分析师凯瑟琳#8226;康特妮(Catherine Cottney)说。 Painful? “Basically we are burning the skin so I inject liquid anaesthetic into each area,” says Forman Taub. Now that Kennedy has been made ambassador, she will need to think hard about whether the butterfly stays; in Japan a small tattoo can even prohibit entry to some restaurants and shops. And in an increasingly crowded jobs market, it is not just in Tokyo that tattoos are becoming taboo. /201312/269614Chinese auto maker Geely Automobile Holdings GELYY -2.92% said it would consider reducing the number of cars it exports to Ukraine for assembly should the political situation there deteriorate. #39;So far we haven#39;t seen a lot of influence on our business,#39; said Ralph Chen, senior brand-management director at Geely International Corp., an arm of Geely engaged in international activities, including exports. #39;We#39;re going to do something if the situation [deteriorates]. When coconut water broke into the American market 10 years ago, it was billed as a miracle drink able to fight viruses, kidney disease and other ailments like osteoporosis. Global sales now reach 0 million a year, and many consumers believe that the beverage has a wide variety of health benefits. But they may be unaware that the drink#39;s marketers have sharply scaled back their claims. Young and Green幼嫩,绿色Not to be confused with coconut milk (the milky-white liquid made from coconut meat), coconut water is the clear fluid from young, still-green coconuts, packaged in angular Tetra Paks, as well as in bottles and faux coconut shells. The flavor is an unusual mix of salty and sweet. The same amount of apple juice has 10 milligrams of sodium and three times as much sugar: 33 grams. The minerals in coconut water are what prompted the early claims of curative power, but their amounts are quite modest and they are widely found in other foods. A banana, for example, has 422 milligrams of potassium, compared with 660 milligrams in a typical container of coconut water. The water#39;s big three minerals are potassium (19 percent of the daily recommended intake), calcium (4 percent) and magnesium (4 percent). Vita Coco, a leading brand, once boasted that it had 15 times the electrolytes — substances like sodium and potassium that are lost in sweat — in sports drinks. Then a 2011 class-action lawsuit contended that some of the mineral sums on its packages were exaggerated; as part of a settlement, Vita Coco agreed to stop saying that it rehydrated better than sports drinks. ;We don#39;t try to compare ourselves to much of anything anymore,; said Arthur Gallego, the company#39;s publicist. These days, coconut water#39;s big rival may be plain old water. How do they compare? Scientists are still wrestling with the question, and while their findings vary, water is starting to look just fine for most people. A 2012 study (funded by Vita Coco) in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that neither coconut water nor sports drinks were better than water in hydrating young men after hourlong workouts. (Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition)上的研究(由Vita Coco公司资助)发现,年轻男子在一小时的锻炼之后,椰汁和运动饮料的补水效果并不比水更好。So What#39;s the Appeal? Coconut water taps into a ;deep consumer vein,; Tom Pirko, a beverage industry analyst, wrote in an email. ;It is not seen as a ‘manufactured#39; concoction, but rather the issue of Mother Earth.; And it seems poised to become just the first in a wave of natural waters; aly for sale are bottled waters from maple and birch trees, barley, cactus and artichokes, with their own exuberant promotions. More Than a Drink不只是饮料Meanwhile, coconut water flows on. Best-selling cookbooks are using it as an additive in soups and smoothies. And it#39;s not just for drinking: Dial has released a soap and a body wash that use coconut water as a hydrating agent — and as a powerful image on the package.

The ed Kingdom ranks as one of the most successful marriages in history. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have survived ancient hatreds, tribal rivalry and war. Each nation has been enriched by a journey of enlightenment, empire, shared energy and enterprise. In seven days, this splendid mess of a union, to e Simon Schama, the British historian, risks being separated into its national parts. Scotland will vote in a referendum to decide whether to stay in the UK or sunder bonds stretching back to 1707. Opinion polls suggest the result is too close to call, a prospect which has alarmed financial markets, wrongfooted allies and sent a complacent coalition government scrambling to find a last-minute sweetener to win over the Scots. Empires and nation states are not immune to break-up, but there is little precedent for a hitherto stable modern democracy splitting in peacetime, in the middle of an economic recovery. This is not the time for recrimination. For the moment, it is enough for this newspaper to declare that the path of separation is a fool’s errand, one fraught with danger and uncertainty. Scotland is a proud and vibrant nation. Scots have contributed disproportionately to the union. They have played a leading role in arts, commerce, literature, the military, politics and sport. But a vote in favour of secession would be an irreversible act with profound consequences, not merely for 5m Scots but also for the other 58m citizens of England, Wales and Northern Ireland (including 750,000 Scots living and working outside Scotland who under the terms of the referendum have no say on the future of their country). The act of separation would diminish the UK in every international body, notably the EU. It would raise complex – and still unanswered – questions about the common defence of the British Isles, the future of the currency and political arrangements for the rest of the UK. Above all, a Yes vote would ignore the lessons of the 20th century, a chapter in European history indelibly scarred by narrow nationalism. A union born of a now-lost empire is one entirely suited to the world of the 21st century. The nation states that prosper in the age of globalisation are ones that bind themselves together in mutual endeavour. The experience of small states in the wake of the financial crisis is far from happy. Iceland and Ireland were left cruelly exposed. Further east, the Baltic states, brave and resourceful as the Scots, are members of the EU and Nato but still feel vulnerable to the bear’s paw of a revanchist Russia. The case against secession cannot rest on nostalgia, though the Better Together campaign has been lamentably short of passion compared with the energetic, well-funded Yes effort run by Alex Salmond, the beguiling first minister of Scotland. It must rest first on an understanding of the political forces which have made independence a tempting prospect for Scots, as well as a hard-nosed assessment of the risks involved for all concerned. The debate about devolving power to Scotland goes back more than a century. Keir Hardie, the Scottish Labour leader, proposed home rule in 1888 but his call carried little resonance. Scots were playing a leading role in ruling one-quarter of the world’s population. Glasgow was famed as the “second city of the empire”. The ties that bind have loosened over the past 70 years. The empire is gone, and the workshop of the world is no more. Scotland’s transition to a post-industrialised economy has been painful, though its overall economic performance over recent decades has been strong. England and Scotland have grown apart politically. In the 1950s, the Conservative and Unionist party – to remind David Cameron’s party of its proper name – had an absolute majority of parliamentary seats in Scotland. Today, the Tory party’s representation has shrunk to a single MP, partly a legacy of Margaret Thatcher’s ill-judged poll tax and the benign neglect of a strong pound which devastated manufacturing north and south of the border. The discovery of North Sea oil in the 1960s further reinforced Scottish nationalism. Tony Blair believed he could stymie the nationalist movement with more devolution of powers. His Labour government established a Scottish parliament at Holyrood. In retrospect, devolution did nothing to halt the secular decline of Labour in Scotland. Too many of the party’s heavyweights treated Scotland as a rotten borough to help them to power in London. Devolution may have encouraged further divergence on policies such as pensions, social care or university education from those in England. Mr Salmond, a seasoned operator, has exploited the populist mood. Voters are angry about austerity caused by the financial crisis and alienated from the political establishment. Mr Salmond casts himself as an insurgent representing a new brand of civic nationalism in which the Scots will have control over their fate in a fresh young democracy. Mr Salmond can tug on the emotions of his fellow countrymen but he has given few credible answers about the challenges – economic, social and international – which would face Scotland. His Panglossian pitch is that the Scots can have the best of all possible worlds: independence, the monarchy and the pound, and that a Scotland which retreats into a narrower nationalist identity will somehow be better equipped to prosper in a world of globalisation. His argument contains glaring inconsistencies. A currency union demands a political union. The eurozone’s travails show us as much. Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, made clear again this week that political independence is incompatible with maintaining sterling as the currency of choice. Mr Salmond insists the English establishment is bluffing. This is no bluff. The currency uncertainty will blight every aspect of the Scottish economy, from commercial lending to mortgages. Without total clarity, every Scottish citizen is left exposed. Mr Salmond claims that separation is the best guarantee of future prosperity. His calculations are based on much wishful thinking covering vital matters such as the future oil price and how much of the UK’s debt would be assumed by the Scots. He presumes that it serves no one’s interest to be unreasonable about the terms of divorce, but he under-estimates the psychological shock. No one can predict the consequences. Nor is it obvious why Scotland will gain early and automatic entry into the EU. Other European states with their own separatist movements – notably Spain – have little incentive to agree to a quick deal. The only certainty is uncertainty, at a high cost to Scotland and the UK. The shift of deposits and money out of Scotland this week is a harbinger. There must be a better way. Britain needs a new political settlement that implements at home what it preaches in Europe: subsidiarity. For too long, the British government has imposed a “Whitehall-knows-best” policy on the nations and regions. More devolution is the answer, but not at any price. Mr Cameron and his London-based colleagues should t carefully in the coming days. It is far from clear how England, the preponderant power, would fit into a federalised union in which Scotland enjoyed all political gifts short of independence. Everything turns on the vote on September 18. It is not too late to remind the Scots and the rest of the UK how much they have benefited from being British. Great Britain stands for an expansive and inclusive view of the world. The union is something precious, not a bauble to be cast aside. In a week’s time, the Scots can vote with a sense of ambition to build on those successes. Rather than retreat into tribalism, they can continue to be part of a nation rooted not just in history and culture but a common destiny which over three centuries has served all so well.9月18日投票那一天,一切都会改变。
