;I guess you can tell Im happy to be here. In fact, Im probably happier than anyone, because most of the people that come up here have an inkling of the idea that someday they may make the Hall of Fame. Believe me, when I was 21, I never thought Id be enshrined with Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan. In high school, I was on overly competitive but underly endowed player. I turned to heavy studies, and eventually won a scholarship to the University of Wyoming. I worked hard at the books, but I always took time to watch Wyoming play. A lot of people dont know this, as a matter of fact -- Wyoming won the NCAA basketball championship (in 1943). After my university graduation at Wyoming, I went to graduate school. I had a lot of offers, but I chose the one with the best athletic program: USC. I became a die-hard basketball fan, with early memories of Walt Hazzard kicking the crap out of my beloved Trojans. I was awarded a PhD in chemistry, and immediately went out to seek my future. Made a lot of money in real estate, and after 15 years I started to dabble in minor league sports. At one time, I owned a tennis team, a soccer team, a volleyball team, and promoted boxing matches. This entrance into the entrepreneurs side of sports eventually led to me becoming a major league owner. 201401/271996

They want to know how often your dog gets outside. They want to know how much exercise your dog is getting. They want to know how much social time with other dogs and other humans. They want to talk to you about what sorts of therapies, largely behavior therapies, youve tried with that animal. Those are the things that often tend to help the most, especially when combined with psychopharmaceuticals. The thing, though, I believe, that helps the most, particularly with social animals,is time with other social animals. In many ways, I feel like I became a service animal to my own dog, and I have seen parrots do it for people and people do it for parrots and dogs do it for elephants and elephants do it for other elephants. I dont know about you; I get a lot of Internet forwards of unlikely animal friendships. I also think its a huge part of Facebook, the monkey that adopts the cat or the great dane who adopted the orphaned fawn,or the cow that makes friends with the pig, and had you asked me eight, nine years ago, about these. I would have told you that they were hopelessly sentimental and maybe too anthropomorphic in the wrong way and maybe even staged, and what I can tell you now is that there is actually something to this. This is legit. In fact, some interesting studies have pointed to oxytocin levels, which are a kind of bonding hormone that we release when were having sex or nursing这是真的。 or around someone that we care for extremely, oxytocin levels raising in both humans and dogs who care about each other or who enjoy each others company,或是在极其喜爱的人身边会产生,催产素水平会在彼此关心和愿意陪伴的人和身体里上升,不止这些,其他研究还表明催产素。and beyond that, other studies show that oxytocin raised even in other pairs of animals,so, say, in goats and dogs who were friends and played with each other, their levels spiked afterwards. I have a friend who really showed me that mental health is in fact a two-way street. 201412/350273

But in any case, I thought I had no choice. So I put my head down and focused on operation technology,我选择脚踏实地工作,专注于公司的运营focused on the users experience, and I delivered. At the time of the IPO,当百度IPO上市的时候Baidu had about 40% of the traffic share in China百度占据了for Chinese search. Four years later, as of today,而四年之后的今天I think we have about 76% of the Chinese search traffic. 76%In fact, I think Baidu answers more queries说实话,中国人使用百度搜索的次数in China today than Google does in the U.S.比在美国人使用谷歌搜索的次数还要多because China is the largest Internet economy by population. At the end of last June, we had 336 million Internet users. Thats larger than the total U.S. population. So U.S. will never be able to catch up. And you know we have在中国,百度占据着a very dominant traffic share over there,绝大部分的流量份额so its really a very good spot to be in. So in retrospect, I think the way to deal with crisis,回首去年,我们应对危机deal with challenge,面对挑战时deal with difficult times, is like this:所采取的方法就是First, you need to be realistic. You need to take a pragmatic approach,采取切实有效的方法because in the beginning,因为一开始we saw the portal companies, well, feed us. They would pay us enough money,利用他们的钱来维持公司运营but thats not the reality. When the difficult time comes,一旦遇到困境they will try to survive by themselves. They will try to control cost. You have to be on your own. And then we figured that what were之后我们发现really good at was Chinese search. We decided to come up with better search service,于是公司决定开发更好的搜索务better product, better user experience.更好的产品,更好的用户体验We started to innovate,不断创新come up with all kinds of features that设计出各式各样的新功能attract the Chinese Internet users. So the second step is you really need to第二步,要不断创新innovating and evolving. When I talk about I give up the CEO job我曾说过要放弃CEO的职位and functioned as the project manager,而成为一个项目经理we actually named that project as ;Project Blitzen;. BlitzenWe wanted to quickly catch up and surpass everyone希望能够通过该项目在为中国网民in terms of search quality for Chinese users. Once you find out what you should do,一旦确定了目标then you need to stay focused. Thats what we did during the difficult这就是我们在2000至2002年困难时期times back in year 2000, 2001, 2002. Many people think search was a done deal. Its boring. Everyone has figured that out在技术和产品方面in terms of technology and product,大家都已经想透了but we thought we could do a better job. We resisted all kinds of temptations from being a portal,曾经有许多诱惑摆在面前,比如转型做门户网站being an SMS player, do online game,做SMS,网络游戏developing all kinds of things以及各种that could make money in the short term. We really, really focused on Chinese search. Thats how we got here.

Thank you. I have only got 18 minutes to explain something that lasts for hours and days,so Id better get started. Lets start with a clip from Al Jazeeras Listening Post. Richard Gizbert: Norway is a country that gets relatively little media coverage. Even the elections this past week passed without much drama. And thats the Norwegian media in a nutshell:挪威的新闻媒体就是这么回事:not much drama. A few years back,Norways public TV channel NRK decided to broadcast live coverage of a seven-hour train ride seven hours of simple footage,a train rolling down the tracks. Norwegians, more than a million of them according to the ratings, loved it. A new kind of reality TV show was born, and it goes against all the rules of TV engagement. There is no story line, no script,no drama, no climax, and its called Slow TV. For the past two months,Norwegians have been watching a cruise ships journey up the coast, and theres a lot of fog on that coast. Executives at Norways National Broadcasting Service are now considering broadcasting a night of knitting nationwide. On the surface, it sounds boring, because it is,but something about this TV experiment has gripped Norwegians. So we sent the Listening Posts Marcela Pizarro to Oslo to find out what it is, but first a warning:我们于是派了监听站节目组的Marcela Pizarro去奥斯陆去一探究竟。 Viewers may find some of the images in the following report disappointing. Thomas Hellum: And then follows an eight-minute story on Al Jazeera about some strange TV programs in little Norway. Al Jazeera. CNN. How did we get there?CNN的Al Jazeera。 We have to go back to ,when one of my colleagues got a great idea. Where do you get your ideas? In the lunchroom. So he said, why dont we make a radio program marking the day of the German invasion of Norway in 1940. We tell the story at the exact time during the night. Wow. Brilliant idea, except this was just a couple of weeks before the invasion day. So we sat in our lunchroom and discussed what other stories can you tell as they evolve? What other things take a really long time? So one of us came up with a train. The Bergen Railway had its 100-year anniversary that year. It goes from western Norway to eastern Norway, and it takes exactly the same time as it did 40 years ago, over seven hours. So we caught our commissioning editors in Oslo, and we said,we want to make a documentary about the Bergen Railway, and we want to make it in full length, and the answer was,Yes, but how long will the program be? Oh, we said, full length. Yes, but we mean the program. And back and forth. Luckily for us, they met us with laughter, very, very good laughter,so one bright day in September,we started a program that we thought should be seven hours and four minutes. Actually, it turned out to be seven hours and 14 minutes due to a signal failure at the last station. We had four cameras, three of them pointing out to the beautiful nature. Some talking to the guests, some information. We will arrive at Haugastl Station.下一站Haugastl。And thats about it,but of course, also the 160 tunnels gave us the opportunity to do some archives. Then a bit of flirting while the food is digested. The last downhill stretch before we reach our destination. We pass Mjlfjell Station. Then a new tunnel. And now we thought, yes, we have a brilliant program. It will fit for the 2,000 train spotters in Norway. 201506/381614

So, for example, in a distant era now,比如说,在以前一个遥远的时代,it was common when one gave a speech to basically talk like writing. So I mean the kind of speech that you see someone giving in an old movie where they clear their throat, and they go,我的意思是那种你在一部老电影里看到的演讲,人们会清一下喉咙,然后说:;Ahem, ladies and gentlemen,; and then they speak in a certain way which has nothing to do with casual speech. Its formal. It uses long sentences like this Gibbon one. Its basically talking like you write, and so, for example,基本上,它就是书面表达式的讲话,再比如,were thinking so much these days about Lincoln because of the movie. The Gettysburg Address was not the main meal of that event. For two hours before that, Edward Everett spoke on a topic that, frankly, cannot engage us today and barely did then. The point of it was to listen to him speaking like writing. Ordinary people stood and listened to that for two hours. It was perfectly natural. Thats what people did then, speaking like writing. Well, if you can speak like writing,那么,如果你可以说话像在写作,then logically it follows that you might want to also sometimes write like you speak. The problem was just that in the material,问题就在传输媒介上,mechanical sense, that was harder back in the day for the simple reason that materials dont lend themselves to it. Its almost impossible to do that with your hand except in shorthand, and then communication is limited. On a manual typewriter it was very difficult,用手写打印机也非常困难,and even when we had electric typewriters,即使我们有了电子打印机,or then computer keyboards, the fact is that even if you can type easily enough to keep up with the pace of speech, more or less, you have to have somebody who can receive your message quickly. Once you have things in your pocket that can receive that message,一但你在口袋里有了能接受这个信息的装置,then you have the conditions that allow that we can write like we speak. 201511/410851
