A few weeks ago, I asked ers to send in essays describing their purpose in life and how they found it. A few thousand submitted contributions, and many essays are online. I’ll write more about the lessons they shared in the weeks ahead, but one common theme surprised me. I expected most contributors would follow the commencement-speech clichés of our high-achieving culture: dream big; set ambitious goals; try to change the world. In fact, a surprising number of people found their purpose by going the other way, by pursuing the small, happy life. Elizabeth Young once heard the story of a man who was asked by a journalist to show his most precious possession. The man, Young wrote, “was proud and excited to show the journalist the gift he had been bequeathed. A banged up tin pot he kept carefully wrapped in cloth as though it was fragile. The journalist was confused, what made this dingy old pot so valuable? ‘The message,’ the friend replied. The message was ‘we do not all have to shine.’ This story resonated deeply. In that moment I was able to relieve myself of the need to do something important, from which I would reap praise and be rewarded with fulfillment. My vision cleared.” Young continues, “I have always wanted to be effortlessly kind. I wanted to raise children who were kind.” She notes that among those who survived the Nazi death camps, a predominant quality she noticed was generosity. “Perhaps,” she concludes, “the mission is not a mission at all. ... Everywhere there are tiny, seemingly inconsequential circumstances that, if explored, provide meaning” and chances to be generous and kind. Spiritual and emotional growth happens in microscopic increments.“也许,”她总结道,“我的使命根本就不是一项使命…… Kim Spencer writes, “I used to be one of the solid ones — one of the people whose purpose was clearly defined and understood. My purpose was seeing patients and ‘saving lives.’ I have melted into the in-between spaces, though. Now my purpose is simply to be the person ... who can pick up the phone and give you 30 minutes in your time of crisis. I can give it to you today and again in a few days. ... I can edit your letter. ... I can listen to you complain about your co-worker. ... I can look you in the eye and give you a few dollars in the parking lot. I am not upset if you cry. I am no longer drowning, so I can help keep you afloat with a little boost. Not all of the time, but every once in a while, until you find other people to help or a different way to swim. It is no skin off my back; it is easy for me.” Terence J. Tollaksen wrote that his purpose became clearer once he began to recognize the “decision trap”: “This trap is an amazingly consistent phenomena whereby ‘big’ decisions turn out to have much less impact on a life as a whole than the myriad of small seemingly insignificant ones.” Tollaksen continues, “I have always admired those goal-oriented, stubborn, successful, determined individuals; they make things happen, and the world would be lost without them.” But, he explains, he has always had a “small font purpose.” “I can say it worked for me. I know it sounds so Midwest, but it’s been wonderful. I have a terrific wife, 5 kids, friends from grade school and high school, college, army, friends locally, and sometimes, best of all, horses, dogs, and cats. Finally, I have a small industrial business that I started and have run for 40 years based on what I now identify as principles of ‘Pope Francis capitalism.’ Hans Pitsch wrote: “At age 85, the question of meaning in my life is urgent. The question of the purpose of my life is another matter. World War II and life in general have taught me that outcomes from our actions or inactions are often totally unpredictable and random.” He adds, “I am thankful to be alive. I have a responsibility to myself and those around me to give meaning to my life from day to day. I enjoy my family (not all of them) and the shrinking number of old friends. You use the term ‘organizing frame’ in one’s life. I am not sure if I want to be framed by an organizing principle, but if there is one thing that keeps me focused, it’s the garden. Lots of plants died during the harsh winter, but, amazingly, the clematises and the roses are back, and lettuce, spinach and tomatoes are thriving in the new greenhouse. The weeping cherry tree in front of the house succumbed to old age. I still have to plant a new tree this year.” This scale of purpose is not for everyone, but there is something beautiful and concrete and well-proportioned about tending that size of a garden.#9744;人生目标的标尺并不适用于所有人,但在打理那么大一个花园的过程中,你能看到某种美丽、切实、均衡的东西。

Many of us have turned to photo sharing on social media to exploit the opportunity to send a shameless selfie to a love interest. But very few of us would be prepared to admit the hidden agenda in our snaps. However, model Holly Carpenter, 23, from Dublin, has decided to address the subject head-on by revealing the secret meaning behind women#39;s Snapchat photos. Holly, who was the winner of Miss Ireland in 2011 and has since enjoyed a successful modelling career, has posted a series of images on her blog, with two pictures side by side - the one on the left with the original caption, and the caption on the right explaining what women really mean. For example in one snap the model shares a photograph of herself posing in a onesie with a dog with the caption: #39;Pjs amp; puppy cuddles#39; which she reveals actually means #39;look how cute I am.#39;例如,有一张她穿着连体衫抱着的照片,配的原话是:“睡衣,小抱抱”,而她的实际意思是“快看我有多可爱!”In another photo, Holly poses in a revealing vest with the caption: #39;So hungover#39; which she then confesses in the caption on the photo on the right means: #39;Cleavage game is strong here...#39;在另一张照片里,她穿着一件比较暴露的背心,配的描述是:“宿醉好难受”,但她承认自己其实想表达的是:“此处有乳沟……”Holly says that she was inspired to create the blog post after witnessing other women creating tactical Snapchats. She told Buzzfeed that she had heard comments like: #39;I#39;m gonna story this selfie so he knows I#39;m out tonight and I#39;m looking well#39; and #39;I sent him a picture of my drink with the cocktail in the background so he knows where we are!#39;她说,她曾听到类似的言论:“我要给这张自拍编个故事,这样他就知道我今晚打扮的漂漂亮亮去参加活动了。” But the model admits that she is not exempt from sending flirtatious snaps. She continued: #39;If I#39;m having a good hair day and my make-up looks nice I#39;ll find any random excuse to send a snap to someone I fancy, like pick up a random coffee mug and write ;mmm coffee; …even though the mug is empty!#39;她继续说:“如果我今天发型不错,妆容也很美,那我会随便编个理由发自拍照给我喜欢的人,比如随便拿个咖啡杯拍一张,写一句‘嗯,咖啡’,但其实杯子是空的!”The post has picked a lot of hits for Holly being shared almost 4,000 times on Facebook and the model says that she believes this is because most women will be able to relate. She added: #39;When I saw how many shares it was getting and how many people were tagging their friends, I knew it was relatable!#39;她接着说:“看到这么多人转发给朋友看,我就知道大家都被说中了!” Baby bear goes downstairs and sits in his small chair at the table . He looks into his small bowl.It is empty! ;Who#39;s been eating my porrodge?;he squeaks .他吱吱叫说:“谁吃了我的麦片粥?”Daddy bear arrives at the table and sits in his big chiar,熊爸爸来到桌边坐在他的太椅子上。He looks into his big bowl .It is also empty! ;Who is been eating my porridge?;he roars .他太声吼叫说:“谁吃了我的麦片粥?”Mummy bear puts her head though the serving hatch from the kitchen and scream . For God#39;s sake, how many time do we have to go though this? Over time, plenty of place names have become attached to food. For example, Hamburg got the hamburger and Brussels got the Brussels sprout. But more rarely, a person#39;s name would be immortalized in cuisine. Listverse wrote about eggs Benedict and others in a previous list, but there are more! 10. Richard Williams And Enoch Bartlett10. Outside of Asia, the most common variety of pear is the Williams pear, a special offshoot of the European pear tree species. It#39;s named after Richard Williams, who raised the trees in his nursery and sp them across England. It#39;s said that the first ones came from the yard of a schoolmaster in the village of Aldermaston. An American named James Carter (not the peanut-farming President) brought several Williams pear trees to the ed States. They were planted on land owned by Thomas Brewer in Roxbury, Massachusetts. That land ended up in the hands of one Enoch Bartlett, who sold the pears and sp them across North America. Maybe he didn#39;t know they aly had a name, or maybe he just ignored that minor fact, but he called them Bartlett pears and the name stuck. It#39;s what North Americans call them to this day. /201506/378842 It#39;s long been thought that chillies can help us lose weight。 Now, new research has proved the fiery food can aid weight loss by speeding upmetabolism。 A study found capsaicin – the ingredient that gives chilli peppers their heat - could help burn off fat in the body。 The temptation to eat fatty foods is often so strong that, for many, they can#39;t resist eating fatty or sugary foods even if they are trying to cut down on calories。 Now, researchers believe capsaicin could provide a solution to this problem; speeding up the metabolism without the need to restrict the diet。 University of Wyoming researchers found capsaicin may stimulate the body to burn energy and create heat (a process known as thermogenesis) – burning off calories in the process。 It does this by activating receptors in the body which set off the process of energy burning。 These receptors are found in white and brown fat cells。 In the body, white fat cells soak up calories and store them as fat – the ded type visible in pot bellies, love handles and wobbly thighs that is the enemy of dieters。 It is known as ‘bad’ fat for this reason。 Brown fat, found in small amounts on the shoulders and neck, actually burns fat to heat the body – and is therefore known as ‘good’ fat。 The researchers found that capsaicin in the diet was able to stimulate a receptor called potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channel protein。 Activating this receptor suppresses obesity associated with a high-fat diet, the researchers found。 They believe this is because it induces ‘bad’ white fat cells to become energy-burning ‘good’ brown fat cells。 The researchers carried out the study on one group of wild mice, and another group of mice who had been genetically engineered to lack the TRPV1 Receptor。 They fed both mice a high fat diet, 0.01 per cent was made up of capsaicin。 0.01%。Capsaicin prevented the weight gain associated with eating a high fat diet in the wild mice, but not the mice that lacked TRPV1. It did this without having any effect on how much food or water the mice consumed。 ‘It did significantly increase the metabolic activity and energy expenditure in wild type mice fed a high-fat diet, but not for mice that genetically lack TRPV1,’ researcher Vivek Krishnan, of University of Wyoming’s School of Pharmacy said。 This is because the fiery ingredient induces ‘bad’ white fat to become ‘good’, energy-burning brown fat and also stimulates the body to create heat, he added。 These steps burn off calories and counteract obesity。 This may help to prevent and manage obesity and other related health complications such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular diseases, the researchers said。 However, they added this effect has not yet been demonstrated in carefully-controlled clinical trials。 Next, the researchers want to further understand the mechanism by which capsaicin prevents obesity, and carry out more trials to further prove that it can help manage weight。
