Our poor dog Jigs had slipped and fallen into the pit. So grandpa ran up with his shovel to rescue the poor dog. He was down there, swimming in the muck. But as grandpa dug through that forest floor, I became fascinated with the roots,但在爷爷挖开森林的地面的时候,我却被那些露出的树根深深地吸引了,and under that, what I learned later was the white mycelium and under that the red and yellow mineral horizons. Eventually, grandpa and I rescued the poor dog, but it was at that moment that I realized当然最终我和爷爷救出了那只可怜的,但也就是在那时我意识到,that that palette of roots and soil was really the foundation of the forest. And I wanted to know more. So I studied forestry. But soon I found myself working alongside the powerful people in charge of the commercial harvest. The extent of the clear-cutting was alarming,在森林中皆伐的范围已经敲响了警钟,and I soon found myself conflicted by my part in it. Not only that, the spraying and hacking of the aspens and birches不仅如此,为了种植更具有商业价值的松树和冷杉,to make way for the more commercially valuable planted pines and firs was astounding. It seemed that nothing could stop this relentless industrial machine. So I went back to school, and I studied my other world. You see, scientists had just discovered in the laboratory in vitro你知道,科学家们那时已经在实验室的试管中发现了that one pine seedling root could transmit carbon to another pine seedling root. But this was in the laboratory, and I wondered, could this happen in real forests? I thought yes. 201611/479439

Easter is a moment to reflect and an important time for Christians and others to gather together with families and friends. This year, after a period of intense debate over the right future for our country, there is a sense that people are coming together and uniting behind the opportunities that lie ahead. For at heart, this country is one great union of people and nations with a proud history and a bright future. And as we face the opportunities ahead of us – the opportunities that stem from our decision to leave the European Union and embrace the world – our shared interests, our shared ambitions, and above all, our shared values can, and must, bring us together. This Easter, I think of those values that we share – values that I learnt in my own childhood, growing up in a vicarage. Values of compassion, community, citizenship. The sense of obligation we have to one another. These are values we all hold in common, and values that are visibly lived out every day by Christians, as well as by people of other faiths or none. I think of those who go out of their way to visit the sick or bereaved, providing comfort and guidance to many in our country at some of the most difficult moments in their lives. I think of the sacrifices and service of aid workers who put themselves in harms way to bring much-needed relief in war-torn parts of the world. We should celebrate all these contributions and others like them, and the difference they make in our society and around the world. In doing so, we should be confident about the role that Christianity has to play in the lives of people in our country. And we should treasure the strong tradition that we have in this country of religious tolerance and freedom of speech. We must continue to ensure that people feel able to speak about their faith, and that absolutely includes their faith in Christ. We must be mindful of Christians and religious minorities around the world who do not enjoy these same freedoms, but who practise their religion in secret and often in fear. And we must do more to stand up for the freedom of people of all religions to practice their beliefs openly and in peace and safety. So this Easter, whatever our faith, let us come together as a nation confident in our values, and united in our commitment to fulfil the obligations that we have to one another. Let us work together to build that brighter future we want for our country. And let us together build a stronger, fairer Britain that truly does work for everyone. And let me wish you all a very happy Easter.201705/507034高级英语口语纯外教视频教学[54]【注意:如果视频不清晰,有白色模糊部分,刷新页面重新播放即可】 /200704/11971Barack Obama: Hello, everybody. You know, Michelle and I, weve really been milking this goodbye thing. So, it behooves me to be very brief. Crowd: No! Barack Obama: Yes, yes. You know, I said before, and I will say again, that when we started on this journey, we did so with an abiding faith in the American people and their ability, our ability to join together and change the country in ways that would make life better for our kids and our grandkids, that change didnt happen from the top-down, but it happened from the bottom-up. It was met sometimes with skepticism and doubt. Some folks didnt think we could pull it off. There were those who felt that the institutions of power and privilege in this country were too deeply entrenched. And yet, all of you came together in small towns and big cities, a whole bunch of you (were) really young, and you decided to believe. And you knocked on doors and you made phone calls, and you talked to your parents who didnt know how to pronounce Barack Obama. And…you got to know each other. And you went into communities that maybe youd never even thought about visiting, and met people that, on the surface, seemed completely different than you – who didnt look like you or talk like you or watch the same TV programs as you. And yet once you started talking to them, it turned out that you had something in common. And it grew, and it built. And people took notice. And throughout, it was infused with a sense of hope. And as I said in 2004, it wasnt blind optimism that drove you to do all this work, it wasnt na#239;veté; it wasnt willful ignorance to all the challenges that America faces. It was hope in the face of difficulty, hope in the face of uncertainty. You proved the power of hope, and throughout this process, Michelle and I – weve just been your front men and women. We have been the face, sometimes the voice, out front on the TV screen or in front of the microphone. But this has never been about us; it has always been about you. And all the amazing things that happened over these last 10 years are really just a testament to you in the same way that when we talk about our amazing military and our men and women in uniform, the militarys not a thing, its a group of committed patriots willing to sacrifice everything on our behalf. It works only because… … of the people in it. As – as cool as the hardware is, and weve got cool hardware, as cool as the machines as weapons and satellites are, ultimately, it comes down to remarkable people, some of them a lot closer to Malias age than mine or Michelles. Well, the same things true for our democracy. Our democracys not the buildings, its not the monuments, its you being willing to work to make things better and being willing to listen to each other and argue with each other and come together and knock on doors and make phone calls and treat people with respect. And that doesnt end. This is just a – this is just a little pit stop. This is a – this is not a period, this is a comma in the continuing story… …of building America. So to all of you that have put your heart and soul not just into our campaigns, but into making schools better, making sure… …our veterans got the care they needed, making sure that… … we left behind a planet that is safe… … and secure for our kids, making sure that hardworking people have a ladder of opportunity that can (ph) support families. For – for all of you who have just done amazing, remarkable work, most of it unheralded, most of it without fanfare, most of it without you getting any word of thanks, we could not be prouder of you. I could not be prouder. This has been the privilege of my life, and I know I speak for Michelle as well, and you know, we look forward to continuing this journey with all of you and I cant wait to see what you do next. And I promise you, Ill be right there with you, all right? God bless you. Thank you, everybody. Yes, we did. Yes, we can. God bless America.201702/490579
