They also tested every participant's blood to measure vitamin C intake, an indicator of how much fruit and vegetables people ate. Then they assigned the participants -- aged 45-79 -- a score of between 0 and 4, giving one point for each of the healthy behaviors. After allowing for age and other factors that could affect the likelihood of dying, the researchers determined people with a score of 0 were four times as likely to have died, particularly from cardiovascular disease. The researchers, who tracked deaths among the participants until 2006, also said a person with a health score of 0 had the same risk of dying as someone with a healthyscore of 4 who was 14 years older. The lifestyle change with the biggest benefit was giving up smoking, which led to an 80 percent improvement in health, the study found. This was followed by eating fruits and vegetables.Moderate drinking and keeping active brought the same benefits, Kay-Tee Khaw and colleagues at the University of Cambridge and the Medical Research Council said."Armed with this information, public-health officials should now be in a better position to encourage behavior changes likely to improve the health of middle-aged and older people," the researchers wrote. Short-term stress lasting as little as a few hours can impair brain-cell communication in areas associated with learning and memory, University of California, Irvine researchers have found. It has been known that severe stress lasting weeks or months can impair cell communication in the brain's learning and memory region, but this study provides the first evidence that short-term stress has the same effect."Stress is a constant in our lives and cannot be avoided," said Dr. Tallie Z. Baram, the Danette Shepard Chair in Neurological Sciences in the UC Irvine School of Medicine and study leader. "Our findings can play an important role in the current development of drugs that might prevent these undesirable effects and offer insights into why some people are forgetful or have difficulty retaining information during stressful situations."In their study, Baram and her UC Irvine colleagues identified a novel process by which stress caused these effects. They found that rather than involving the widely known stress hormone cortisol, which circulates throughout the body, acute stress activated selective molecules called corticotropin releasing hormones, which disrupted the process by which the brain collects and stores memories.Learning and memory take place at synapses, which are junctions through which brain cells communicate. These synapses reside on specialized branchlike protrusions on neurons called dendritic spines. In rat and mouse studies, Baram's group saw that the release of CRH in the hippocampus, the brain's primary learning and memory center, led to the rapid disintegration of these dendritic spines, which in turn limited the ability of synapses to collect and store memories. The researchers discovered that blocking the CRH molecules' interaction with their receptor molecules eliminated stress damage to dendritic spines in the hippocampal cells involved with learning and memory. In addition, the authors replicated the effects of stress on dendritic spines by administering low levels of synthetic CRH, and watching how the spines retracted over minutes. "Fortunately, once we removed the CRH, the spines seemed to grow back," Baram said.Baram also noted that there are compounds under development that show the ability to block CRH receptors, and that this study can play a role in the creation of therapies based on these compounds to address stress-related learning and memory loss. The study appears in the March 12 edition of the Journal of Neuroscience. Yuncai Chen, Celine Dubé and Courtney Burgdorff of UC Irvine also participated in the study, which was supported by the National Institutes of Health. /200803/31404THE 30-second clip begins with one figure, usually helmeted or masked, dancing to a catchy mix by Baauer called “Harlem Shake”. The surrounding people appear oblivious to the movement. Fifteen seconds in, the beat drops, a voice says “Do the Harlem Shake”, and everyone starts gyrating manically. Most are suddenly oddly costumed, and waving random objects. Filthy Frank, a blogger, seems to have uploaded the first version a month ago. A group of Australian teens posted their response. Their version, with more than 20m views, also went viral. Aly a parody, it was parodied. A lot. Searching “Harlem Shake” on YouTube now brings 330,000 results. Some of the copycats have notched up even more views than the original uploads. One, posted by a Norwegian military squad (pictured), has had 52m views. Firemen, athletes (including Manchester City footballers), porn stars, Sports Illustrated models, newscasters, students, office workers and the Simpsons have all uploaded their own versions of the Harlem Shake. Some have got into trouble for their silliness. According to the National Centre Against Censorship hundreds of American students have been punished for participating in the Shake, with many of them being suspended. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a made mid-flight. In Western Australia, 15 miners were sacked for filming at work. But this is not the true Harlem Shake, say many in Harlem. Chef Jones, who is in her 50s, remembers the original version. “That’s not authentic. It can’t compete with the Harlem Shake I know,” she says as she moves her shoulders and arms to demonstrate the original move on Harlem’s busy 125th Street. A-tone, a hip-hop historian, says “they share the name but that’s it.” The original dance was created by the late Albert Leopold Boyce (Al B) on Harlem’s basketball courts three decades ago in the early days of hip hop. Sandra Boyce, mother of the original’s creator, bears no animosity toward the meme, however. “Let them do their thing.” Others in Harlem are angry about it. One fellow, who goes by “CJ”, played on those courts and knew Boyce well. “It’s a disservice to him and to Harlem,” he says. Derek Watson and Patrick Johnson, two residents, concede the meme is funny, but also say “it is a mockery.” Some teenagers uploaded a clip of themselves performing the “Real, Real, Real Harlem Shake” to highlight the difference between the original and what people are doing now. It got a paltry 1.6m views.

When Liu Xiang claimed victory in the 110-m hurdles in Athens, delivering China its first ever sprint gold, you could almost sense the alarm in the announcers' voices. Few had heard of this mystery athlete, much less knew how to pronounce his given name. What a difference four years make. In Beijing, Liu, 25, along with basketball star Yao Ming, will be the poster boy for China's mighty Olympic squad. Here's a quick language guide: his name (pronounced Sheeahng) means "to soar" in Chinese. Soaring is just what China expects Liu to do. A recent Internet poll found that the Chinese citizenry's No. 1 Olympic wish is for Liu to win gold. The Chinese Sports Ministry, which has three doctors dedicated to Liu's well-being, apparently holds similarly high hopes. Just how important is Liu to the Chinese nation? Well, an insurance company has valued his legs at .5 million. Yes, that's just a teeny bit of pressure. And there's no sign of its letting up. In June, Cuba's Dayron Robles — wearing an oversize gold cross, a chunky watch and a pair of glasses — almost casually broke the world record that Liu had set two years earlier. Now Liu must strike gold and try to reclaim the world mark. "In China, I don't think even the Prime Minister is as famous as he is," says former British world champion Colin Jackson of Liu, who demolished Jackson's world record. "There's a lot of pressure on him to deliver that gold medal, but he has incredible competition. That must be hell for him."
