Britons may be tightening their belts to cope with the credit crunch, but their favourite free leisure activity involves whipping off their clothes, a new poll showed Monday. However the overall figure disguised a stark difference between men and women, with female respondents preferring a good gossip to a good time between the sheets.According to the YouGov survey conducted over the Internet, 37 percent of Britons rank having sex at the top of their list of activities that don't cost a penny. That was more than the next three highest options combined -- gossiping with friends (18 percent), window shopping (nine percent) and going to a museum (six percent)."During the credit crunch our famed British upper lip might not be as stiff as before but other parts still are," said Lisa Power, head of policy at the Terrence Higgins Trust, the sexual health charity that commissioned the poll. However, while 53 percent of men ranked sex as number one, only 21 percent of women put sex atop their list, with 28 percent saying they preferred gossiping with friends. It also showed that passion levels may be tied to the cold weather, with 43 percent of Scots rating sex as their favourite freetime activity, compared to 35 percent of Londoners.By contrast, a study by the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex concluded that declining house prices in Britain increase the risk of divorce. The YouGov survey interviewed 2,144 people over the Internet between November 21 and 23. /200812/57799I complimented one of my co-workers on having lost ten pounds. However, I couldn't resist bragging that when I was 17, 1 weighed 225 pounds and today I tip the scales at 224. 1 added, "That's not bad for a man of my age." Overhearing this, a woman remarked, "You mean to say it took you all this time to lose one pound?" Never trouble trouble till trouble troubles you. 2. I think that that that that that student wrote on the blackboard was wrong. 3. I know. You know. I know that you know. I know that you know that I know. 4. We must hang together, or we'll be hanged separately. 5. The quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog. 6. Was it a bar or a bat I saw? 7. 上联:To China for china, China with china, dinner on china. 8. 2B or not 2B, that is a ? To be or not to be, that is a question.

A man's genetic make-up may play a role in whether he has sons or daughters, a study of hundreds of years of family trees suggests.Newcastle University researchers found men were more likely to have sons if they had more brothers and vice versa if they had more sisters. They looked at 927 family trees, with details on 556,387 people from North America and Europe, going back to 1600.The same link between sibling sex and offspring sex was not found for women. The precise way that genes can influence baby sex remains unproven. But the Evolutionary Biology study could clear up a long-standing mystery - a flood of boy babies after World War I.While a woman will always pass a female "X" chromosome via her egg to her child, the father effectively "decides" the sex of the child by passing on either another "X" in his sperm, making a girl, or a "Y" chromosome, making a boy. While the birthrate is almost 50/50, suggesting that overall men will deliver equal amounts of "X" sperm and "Y" sperm, scientists have suspected that in some individual couples the balance is shifted in favour of either boys or girls.Various explanations have been put forward for this, ranging from differences in the time in the woman's monthly cycle that sex happens, to the amount of time thatsperm spend waiting in the testicles. The Newcastle study, by Dr Corry Gellatly, is strong evidence that there is a genetic component. He found that within families, boys with lots of brothers were more likely to have a higher number of sons themselves and those with lots of sisters were more likely to have lots of daughters.War babiesDr Gellatly said it was likely that a genetic difference affected the relative numbers of "X" and "Y" sperm within those produced by the man. This gene, while only active in the man, could be carried by men and women."The family tree study showed that whether you're likely to have a boy or a girl is inherited."He said that the effect was to actually balance out the proportion of men and women in the population."If there there are too many males in the population, for example, females will more easily find a mate, so men who have more daughters will pass on more of their genes, causing more females to be born in later generations."In the years after World War I, there was an upsurge in boy births, and Dr Gellatly said that a genetic shift could explain this. The odds, he said, would favour fathers with more sons - each carrying the "boy" gene - having a son return from war alive, compared with fathers who had more daughters, who might see their only son killed in action. However, this would mean that more boys would be fathered in the following generation, he said. /200812/59762

According to MyHeritage.com, everyone has a little celebrity(1) inside. Largely meant for charting family trees(2) and as a genealogy(3) community, the Web site also boasts an addictive(4) face recognition technology that blurs(5) the boundary between the great unwashed(6) and the thoroughly groomed(7).To find out which celebrity you most resemble(8), download a photo of yourself, and you'll quickly receive a list of stars with similar facial features. The results, which can include men and women, are often surprising. In one trial, a white, goateed(9), middle-aged man came up as most resembling the young black comedian Chris Tucker — and onlookers(10) exclaimed, "You know, I can see that."The Israel-based site uses algorithms(11) to compare faces. From a database of 3,200 celebs, ten ranked results are provided, which can be quite disparate(12).This writer's famous twins included the comedian Ben Stiller, the economist John Maynard Keynes and the painter Georgia O'Keeffe. Which makes sense, since many of my friends think of me as a comedic (if womanly) painter, with a strong penchant(13) for governmental interventionist(14) fiscal policy(15).Whatever our differences, though, MyHeritage suggests we at least share some superficial(16) similarities. The lesson, as always, is that machines know us better than ourselves. In this way, MyHeritage resembles the music Web site Pandora.com, which functions as a personal DJ. Pandora can lead a listener to music they might not know, but are predisposed to(17) like.On Pandora, you plug in a band or artist — for example, Beck. After listening to his "Fourteen Rivers," Pandora next cues up Jackson C. Frank's "(Tumble) in the Wind," and continues with songs by the Microphones, Iron amp; Wine and Travis. And if Beck sounds like Travis, then I might as well look like Georgia O'Keeffe. 根据网站MyHeritage.com,每个人都多多少少有些明星相。 /200805/38137Women who gain more than 40 pounds (18 kg ) during pregnancy have nearly twice the risk of delivering a heavy baby as those who gain less, US researchers said on Friday. The study of more than 40,000 U.S. women and their babies found as many as one in five women gains too much weight during pregnancy, doubling the chances her baby will weigh 9 pounds (4 kg) or more. And they found women who gain more than 40 pounds during pregnancy are more likely to have a heavy baby even if they do not have gestational diabetes, a short-term form of diabetes linked with pregnancy that is known to increase the risk of having a big baby."Because there are so many women who are gaining more than 40 pounds during pregnancy, it's an important health message for most women to avoid excessive weight during pregnancy," Dr. Teresa Hillier of Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Oregon, whose study appears in the journal Obstetrics amp; Gynecology, said in a telephone interview.Hillier said gaining extra weight during pregnancy increases the risk for having heavy babies, and studies suggest these babies are programed to become overweight or obese later in life.According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, babies who weigh more than 9 pounds at birth are considered heavy.A large baby can pose risks for a difficult delivery -- increasing the chances of vaginal tearing, bleeding, and Caesarian-sections for the mother and the risk of stuck shoulders and broken collar bones for the baby.In the study, Hillier and colleagues examined the medical records of 41,540 women who gave birth in Washington, Oregon and Hawaii from 1995-2003. All had been tested for gestational diabetes and 5.4 percent were treated for it with a program of diet, exercise and insulin, if needed, to control blood sugar.Overall, 20 percent of the women in the study who gained more than 40 pounds -- the upper limit of pregnancy weight gain recommendations in the ed States -- gave birth to heavy babies.Fewer than 12 percent of women in the study with normal weight gain delivered heavy babies, she said. The group at greatest risk were those who gained more than 40 pounds and had gestational diabetes. Nearly 30 percent of these women had heavy babies, compared with 13.5 percent of women with gestational diabetes who had normal weight gains during pregnancy. The researchers said the findings suggest all women should avoid excessive weight gain during pregnancy. And women who are being treated for gestational diabetes should also strive to keep weight gain below 40 pounds."You can't treat the glucose and ignore the weight gain issue," Hillier said.Weight gain during pregnancy has been rising over the past two decades, and some researchers suspect this may be fueling an epidemic of childhood obesity. /200811/55022Symmetry equals sex Starting at conception, the human body develops by neatly splitting cells. If every division were to go perfectly, the result would be a baby whose left and right sides are mirror images. But nature doesn't work that way. Genetic mutations and environmental pressures skew symmetry, and the results have lifelong implications. Good symmetry shows that an individual has the genetic goods to survive development, is healthy, and is a good and fertile choice for mating. /201004/101558

When it comes to vegetables, one method of cooking definitely does not fit all. For example, carrots can pretty much stand up to any style of cooking, but boil them, and you'll want to run in the opposite direction. Brussels sprouts, the scourge of nursery school students everywhere, are most delicious pan-roasted, but steam them, and you'll wind up with something you'd probably not want to feed to the pooch. Here's a short list of what to cook, and how. CabbageSlice, panfry, or sauté in olive or sesame oil with a tablespoon of butter.1. Cultural practices, cultural differences, local manners, and mores: traveling the globe can be a behavioral minefield, even when you have the best intentions. Everything from greeting to eating can be an opportunity to do the wrong thing, and not only embarrass yourself, but offend your host countrymen. Look out for the following cultural mistakes and try to avoid them while going abroad. Where It's Offensive: Korea, Thailand, China, Europe, the Middle East. Personal space varies as you travel the globe. In Mediterranean countries, if you refrain from touching someone's arm when talking to them or if you don't greet them with kisses or a warm embrace, you'll be considered cold. But backslap someone who isn't a family member or a good friend in Korea, and you'll make them uncomfortable. In Thailand, the head is considered sacred--never even pat a child on the head. What You Should Do Instead 对策:Observe what locals are doing and follow suit. In Eastern countries remember that touching and public displays of affection are unacceptable. In places like Qatar and Saudi Arabia, men and women are forbidden from interacting, let along touching. 2.Blowing Your Nose 擤鼻涕Where It's Offensive: Japan, China, Saudi Arabia, France. Some cultures find it disgusting to blow your nose in public--especially at the table. The Japanese and Chinese are also repelled by the idea of a handkerchief. What You Should Do Instead 对策:If traveling through Eastern and Asian countries, leave the hankies at home and opt for disposable tissues instead. In France as well as in Eastern countries, if you're dining and need to clear your nasal passages, excuse yourself and head to the restroom. Worst-case scenario: make an exaggerated effort to steer away from the table. Let's hope you don't have a cold. Where It's Offensive: Africa, Japan, Thailand, China, Finland. In some countries, like China, Japan, and some African nations, the food's the thing, so don't start chatting about your day's adventures while everyone else is digging into dinner. You'll likely be met with silence--not because your group is unfriendly, but because mealtimes are for eating, not talking. Also avoid conversations in places a country might consider sacred or reflective--churches in Europe, temples in Thailand, and saunas in Finland. What You Should Do Instead 对策:Keep quiet! 保持沉默!4.Removing Your Shoes…or Not 脱鞋......与否Where It's Offensive: Hawaii, the South Pacific, Korea, China, Thailand. Take off your shoes when arriving at the door of a London dinner party and the hostess will find you uncivilized, but fail to remove your shoes before entering a home in Asia, Hawaii, or the Pacific Islands and you'll be considered disrespectful. Not only does shoe removal very practically keeps sand and dirt out of the house, it's a sign of leaving the outside world behind. What You Should Do Instead 对策:If you see a row of shoes at the door, start undoing your laces. If not, keep the shoes on. 否则,就穿鞋进去吧!5.Knowing Your Right from Your Left 分清左右手Where It's Offensive: India, Morocco, Africa, the Middle East. Many cultures still prefer to eat using traditional methods--their hands. In these cases, food is often offered communally, which is why it's important to wash your hands before eating and observe the right-hand-is-for-eating and the left-hand-is-for-other-duties rule. If you eat with your left hand, expect your fellow diners to be mortified. And when partaking from a communal bowl, stick to a portion that's closest to you. Do not get greedy and plunge your hand into the center. What You Should Do Instead 对策:Left-handed? Attempt to be ambidextrous--even children who are left-handed in these cultures are taught to eat with their right hand--or at least explain yourself to your fellow diners before plunging in. Once you are on the ground of a different country, remain highly sensitive to native behavior. Never be completely surprised by anything; try to take it in stride, and don't feel offended if something seems offensive--like queue jumping. After all, this is a global village, and we are all very different. /200908/81480Unhappy marriage? Blame the kids, claims eight-year studyIt may not come as a surprise to parents, but having children really does impinge on marital bliss.Nine in ten couples suffer a downturn in 'marital satisfaction' once the first child is born, according to an eight-year study. And relationship and stress problems are worse for those who live together before getting married and starting a family. The findings will ring true for millions of parents who found everything from their finances to their sex lives suddenly changed with a new arrival. But the researchers insist the findings should not be seen as a reason to remain childless as bringing children into the world can bring a 'whole dimension of family happiness'.Psychologists at the universities of Denver and Texas examined the marriages of around 220 couples over an eight-year period. They found 90 per cent suffered what they called a 'decrease in marital satisfaction' after the birth of a child.Childless couples suffered the same problems - only a little later, explained Denver University psychology professor Scott Stanley. He said: 'Couples who do not have children also show diminished marital quality over time. However, having a baby accelerates the deterioration, especially seen during periods of adjustment right after the birth of a child.'The research, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found relationship problems were worse for those who had lived together first - possibly because long-established shared routines are more disrupted by new arrivals /200904/66929

We've all been in relationships where, at times, we've felt more like a mom or a secretary than a significant other. While we understand that healthy relationships require compromises, we've compiled a list of favors that good boyfriends know better than to consistently request. If you're constantly taking on any of the items on this list (especially with any hint of resentment), it's time to get your guy to lend a hand.www.kekenet.com1. His laundryPairing your socks isn't exactly our idea of a stay-at-home date, nor does living with you make us a 1950s housewife. A good compromise is for one partner to sort and start the laundry and the other to fold and put it away. Plus, studies show that helping around the house increases a man's chances of getting laid. So, how 'bout that pile of dishes? If you clean up the sink while we tackle the living room, we'll get to the bedroom twice as fast. www.kekenet.com你帮他洗衣好男人不会强求你成为上个世纪60年代的家庭主妇,让你为他洗衣,叠衣,还是一人一半。 /201001/94657Attractive fathers do not pass their looks on to sonsAttractive fathers do not pass their looks on to their sons but they will hand their good looks down to their daughters, research shows. In a study of family photographs, psychologists Professor David Perrett and Elisabeth Cornwell - now at the University of Colorado have found that while both father and mother can influence the attractiveness of their daughters, the couple's good looks do not necessarily contribute to the attractiveness of their son as an adult.Handsome men with masculine looks are likely to pass on masculine features, but not facial attractiveness. The theory suggests it is not unusual for attractive parents to produce a beautiful daughter while failing to pass on the same good looks to a son. While many celebrity mothers produce stunning daughters - such as Goldie Hawn and her daughter Kate Hudson or Jerry Hall and her daughter Georgia - the same is not necessarily true of celebrity fathers.Sean Stewart, the son of Rod Stewart and his first wife Alana, would probably be judged less attractive than his model sister Kimberly."We can't see a strong relationship between the parents' attractiveness and the sons. If the parents are supermodels, the chances are the daughters will be lookers," Perrett said.Prof Perrett said it has previously been suggested that a woman could increase her own reproductive success by choosing a "sexy" mate whose genes would be passed on to male offspring, making them irresistible to the next generation. But the new study, published in the current edition of the journal Animal Behaviour, contradicts the theory. He said: " When we looked at women's faces, we found clear evidence that attractiveness passed from both father and mother to daughter. For the male line, we find that facial masculinity conforms to the rule 'like father - like son'. Masculine dads have masculine sons. But we did not find any evidence that facial attractiveness is passed from father to son." /200904/66177If we can only encounter each other rather than stay with each other, then I wish we had never encountered。 /201010/115231
