Modern humans have been walking the Earth about 0,000 years. So it’s not surprising that over time our bodies have adapted. From looking out sabre-tooth tigers in the distant past to checking the latest on social media now, our frames have had to cope with changing demands. But, says B Focus magazine, some adaptations have left a few weird leftovers in modern humans… Bee you were born, you had a tail, albeit only a few weeks. All mammals develop a tail in the womb, but humans (except in a few very rare cases) lose it bee birth. The coccyx, or tailbone, at the bottom of the spine is the tail’s last remnant. In the corner of your eye, next to your tear duct, is what’s left of a third eyelid. In many reptiles and birds, and some mammals, this translucent blinking membrane can be drawn horizontally across the eye to add moisture, extra protection or to remove debris. In humans it assists tear drainage. Most people only become aware of their wisdom teeth thanks to toothache in their late teens and early twenties. These extra molars were probably used by our larger-jawed ancestors to grind up raw plant material. Now, these teeth are virtually useless, and their removal is one of the most common surgical precedes in the UK. Around a quarter of the population has a small bump on the upper edge of the ear, known as Darwin’s Point, after its description in naturalist Charles Darwin ’s book on evolution, The Descent of Man. Its position matches the location of more prominent points on the ears of many of our primate cousins, providing another sign of our common ancestry. If you’ve ever seen someone wiggle their ears, then you’ve seen them use a set of vestigial muscles called the auriculares muscles. Cats, dogs and many other mammals use them to move their ears and focus hearing. Our ancestors all but lost this ability, making the muscles good little more than the occasional party trick. Jacobson’s organ is an important smell sensor in many animals, from elephants to salamanders (the picture shows the mouth of a Mexican beaded lizard, which contains the organ).雅各布森器官(犁鼻器)在很多动物身上是个很重要的气味传感器,不论是大象还是蝾螈(下图展示了念珠蜥蜴的嘴巴,里面包含了这种器官)Some studies suggest humans have a remnant of this organ at the back of the nose, but as there are no nerves connecting it to the brain, it’s unlikely to play a role in our sense of smell. About 85% of people have what is called a palmaris longus, a vestigial muscle running from the elbow to the heel of the hand. In some primates, this muscle assists climbing, while in cats and other predators, it retracts the claws. You can test if you have it by flexing your wrist and touching your fifth finger to your thumb - if it’s there, it will pop up. Place an object in the hand of a baby under five months old, and the fingers will automatically close around it with a surprisingly strong grip. This reaction, known as the palmar grasp reflex, is a throwback to hairier times when babies of our predecessors would have clung to their mothers by gripping on to their body fur. They appear when you are frightened or a bit chilly, thanks to the tiny muscles called arrector pili surrounding the hair follicles in your skin. When these muscles contract, your hairs stand up. In humans, such hair-raising has little effect, but it could have made our furrier ancestors appear larger when threatened, and would have provided insulation in cold weather by trapping a layer of air by the skin. The plantaris is a small muscle that plays such a minor role in humans that about one in people don’t have it at all. Situated behind the knee, this muscle connects to the ankle via a long tendon that, in our more flexible primate relatives, can be used to make the foot grasp branches or pick up objects.

How to Stop a Rumor Online (Bee the Rumor Becomes a Lie) (Feliks Kogan) ShutterstockDid you hear the thing about the Florida woman who implanted a third breast in order to be "unattractive to men"? The one who is filming "her daily life in Tampa to show the struggles she faces because of her surgery"?She didn't, and she is not. The whole thing— better or worse—was a hoax. The Internet moves quickly. Rumors emerge, intentionally and not; they sp, intentionally and not. There's a reason, of course, that "wildfire" is such a common metaphor when it comes to describing this stuff: Rumors, once sparked, don't just sp extremely quickly; they are also extremely difficult to contain. And on top of everything else, it is extremely hard to predict which direction they'll take as they sp.Enter Emergent.info. The site, launched today after two months of testing and data-gathering, is hoping to change that by tracking rumors that arise in (pretty much) real time. As Craig Silverman, the rumor researcher who created the site, told me: "It's aiming to be a real-time monitoring of claims that are emerging in the press."Emergent.info works through a combination of human and algorithmic processing. Silverman and a research assistant find rumors that are being reported in the mainstream media—most often, stories that bubble up through social media and get spotted by one outlet … and then, from there, picked up by other outlets. Then they search Google News, which aggregates various news outlets' take on the story. They gather those stories and enter them into their database, classifying them according to the outlet and to how each of the outlets is reporting them. Some will report rumors not as rumors, but rather as simply true or simply false; the majority, however, simply report the fact that they have heard them. Often they'll hedge that repetition with caveats like "Sources:" or "Rumor:" or "Unconfirmed:" in headlines or texts. Just as often, however, they'll be more subtle in their warnings. In the case of the Tri-Breasted Lady, many places simply repeated the rumor as fact, their main additional caveat being a well-placed "WTF."Then their algorithm takes over. Emergent.info is essentially a web app, built on an API from the back-end database. (You can think of it as something of a data-driven version of Snopes—with a more expansive premise. "Snopes, they're amazing," Silverman says, "but they only do Snopes work; they don't aggregate what other people are doing. This site is able to identify claims and then actually see, okay, who's got the best inmation about it?") Every hour, Emergent.info's script crawls the stories to see whether their text has changed. The system also checks share counts to monitor how stories are moving through the social media ecosystem. All of which, Silverman says, helps to answer questions that haven't been so systematically analyzed bee. Among them: "What's the life cycle of a rumor in the press now? And how are news organizations dealing with things that are unconfirmed? And are they updating the stories, and are they sticking with it over time?"Take the reports—false reports, it turns out—that Durex is making a pumpkin-spice condom: Through Emergent.info, you can see who repeated the rumor, who checked it, and who debunked it. Or take, more seriously, the stories that emerged last week claiming that a meteorite had landed in Nicaragua. (That rumor is still listed as unverified on Emergent.info, because no one has been able to prove that such a meteorite actually fell.)A challenge news organizations face when it comes to rumor-reporting in particular is the fact that rumors tend to be much more shareable—and much more clickable—than corrections. Take your friend and mine, Ms. Tampa Triple-Breast (self-given pseudonym: Jasmine Tridevil). One of the early stories about her, in the New York Post, got 0,000 shares. The Snopes (mostly) debunking the initial story had ,500 shares—a decent amount a story that is, technically, a non-story. the most part, though, the s debunking the rumor get extremely little attention. ( a more crystalline example of all that, you can look to Buzzfeed's coverage of the story. Its initial story got more than 30,000 shares; its debunking of that story got just over 1,000.) Which means that news organizations often have very little incentive—direct, commercial incentive, at least—to put their time and energy into them. As a result, as Silverman puts it: The Total Recall rumor is "a story that, I would argue, the average person probably doesn't know is not true."The larger problem with all that is that rumors, once they're put out there into the maw of the media, are notoriously hard to correct. There's the fact that "sorry, just kidding about that three-boobed lady thing" is nowhere near as sharable as a "whoa, three-boobed lady!" thing in the first place. But there's also the fact that there is very little unimity among media outlets about how updates, corrections, retractions, and the like should be presented to ers. Most outlets will simply update a story that contains a debunked claim; a few will write new stories altogether, linking to the previous one in the process. That can leave ers, however, in a kind of epistemological limbo: You're never quite sure what's been verified and what has not. Trust is a precious resource in journalism; many outlets haven't fully figured out how to preserve it."So much of this stuff is public bee news organizations get to it," Silverman points out. "So that's a very different dynamic from what used to happen. So if something is by default public, how do you decide when you're doing to point at it in a way that's responsible? And then how do you deal with it as it sort of takes its life path to being true or false?" Bringing some data to bear on those questions, he's hoping, will help news outlets start to answer them.

When she began her career as a professional sheep dog Floss was impressive - the sheep responded well to her, she was faster than your average and she certainly looked good. But farmer Dave Issac has reluctantly decided to sell Floss as she is now too big to get through his farmyard gates - because she is a Peugeot estate car. Mr Issac, 6, who lives on an 180-acre farm near Battle in East Sussex, converted the family car into a working sheep dog in tribute to his dog which had recently died. He spent £,000 covering the family car in fur and modifying it until it became an exact replica of Floss, his favourite sheep dog. Floss the sheep dog car, who has a top speed of 0mph, soon proved to be a surprisingly effective herder as the flock of sheep failed to notice they were being rounded up by a much larger animal with headlamps eyes and an exhaust. Mr Issac said: 'I know it was a bit of a mad thing to do but it was a tribute to my old sheep dog Floss who passed away. 戴夫说:“我知道这样做看起来很疯狂,但这确实是对我死去的弗洛斯一个很好的纪念” 'I have three kids and we loved her and as a family we all missed her terribly. “我有三个孩子,我们都很爱弗洛斯,把她当做家人,我们都十分想念她” 'So I got together with a friend and we built Floss the sheep dog car in my barn, copying as closely as I could every last detail of my old dog. “所以我和一个朋友一起在我的谷仓里完成了这辆大车,尽可能地还原了弗洛斯的样子” 'Sheep aren't known their intelligence and they didn't seem to notice the difference so they were quite happy. But Floss the car, which is not licensed to drive on public roads, is now too big to navigate along the narrow farm tracks and through the gates to Mr Issac's fields. Because Floss also required a timber frame built around the Peugeot's chassis to attach the fur, the car is now taking up too much space in the barn of a busy working farm. Mr Issac added:'They were things we didn't really consider when we built her so with a heavy heart she is going on E-bay. 戴夫还说:“当初着手做的时候并没有考虑到这些问题,所以现在我们怀着沉重的心情把她放在E-bay网上准备卖掉” 'It's been a lot of fun and she handles well, is obedient and nice and docile and surprisingly aerodynamic. Mr Isaac hopes Floss the sheep dog car may interest festival organisers or dog charities as a fun car. 戴夫希望这辆名叫弗洛斯的大车能够引起节日组织者或是慈善协会等人的兴趣,把它作为一辆趣味汽车 'As long as she goes to a good home I'll be happy,' he said. Floss shares more than a few characteristics with the iconic Mutts Cutts van immortalised in the cult film Dumb and Dumber.

Michael is alive and he’s got himself locked up the third time. First it was Fox River, then there was Sona - the ghastly, lawless prison in Panama - and now Michael’s incarcerated in Morocco.
