I wish I might take this for a compliment; but to be so easily seen through I am afraid is pitiful. ;;That is as it happens. It does not follow that a deep, intricate character is more or less estimable than such a one as yours. ;;Lizzy, ; cried her mother, ;remember where you are, and do not run on in the wild manner that you are suffered to do at home. ;;I did not know before, ; continued Bingley immediately, ;that your were a studier of character. It must be an amusing study. ;;Yes, but intricate characters are the MOST amusing. They have at least that advantage. ;;The country, ; said Darcy, ;can in general supply but a few subjects for such a study. In a country neighbourhood you move in a very confined and unvarying society. ;;But people themselves alter so much, that there is something new to be observed in them for ever. ;;Yes, indeed, ; cried Mrs. Bennet, offended by his manner of mentioning a country neighbourhood. ;I assure you there is quite as much of THAT going on in the country as in town. ;Everybody was surprised, and Darcy, after looking at her for a moment, turned silently away. Mrs. Bennet, who fancied she had gained a complete victory over him, continued her triumph.;I cannot see that London has any great advantage over the country, for my part, except the shops and public places. The country is a vast deal pleasanter, is it not, Mr. Bingley?;;When I am in the country, ; he replied, ;I never wish to leave it; and when I am in town it is pretty much the same. They have each their advantages, and I can be equally happy in either. ;;Aye--that is because you have the right disposition. But that gentleman, ; looking at Darcy, ;seemed to think the country was nothing at all. ;;Indeed, Mamma, you are mistaken, ; said Elizabeth, blushing for her mother. ;You quite mistook Mr. Darcy. He only meant that there was not such a variety of people to be met with in the country as in the town, which you must acknowledge to be true. ;;Certainly, my dear, nobody said there were; but as to not meeting with many people in this neighbourhood, I believe there are few neighbourhoods larger. I know we dine with four-and-twenty families. ;Nothing but concern for Elizabeth could enable Bingley to keep his countenance. His sister was less delicate, and directed her eyes towards Mr. Darcy with a very expressive smile. Elizabeth, for the sake of saying something that might turn her mother#39;s thoughts, now asked her if Charlotte Lucas had been at Longbourn since HER coming away.;Yes, she called yesterday with her father. What an agreeable man Sir William is, Mr. Bingley, is not he? So much the man of fashion! So genteel and easy! He had always something to say to everybody. THAT is my idea of good breeding; and those persons who fancy themselves very important, and never open their mouths, quite mistake the matter. ; Article/201106/141715My truck seemed to have no problem with the black ice that covered the roads. I drove very slowly, though, not wanting to carve a path of destruction through Main Street. When I got out of my truck at school, I saw why I#39;d had so little trouble. Something silver caught my eye, and I walked to the back of the truck — carefully holding the side for support — to examine my tires. There were thin chains crisscrossed in diamond shapes around them. Charlie had gotten up who knows how early to put snow chains on my truck. My throat suddenly felt tight. I wasn#39;t used to being taken care of, and Charlie#39;s unspoken concern caught me by surprise. I was standing by the back corner of the truck, struggling to fight back the sudden wave of emotion the snow chains had brought on, when I heard an odd sound. It was a high-pitched screech, and it was fast becoming painfully loud. I looked up, startled. I saw several things simultaneously. Nothing was moving in slow motion, the way it does in the movies. Instead, the adrenaline rush seemed to make my brain work much faster, and I was able to absorb in clear detail several things at once. Edward Cullen was standing four cars down from me, staring at me in horror. His face stood out from a sea of faces, all frozen in the same mask of shock. But of more immediate importance was the dark blue van that was skidding, tires locked and squealing against the brakes, spinning wildly across the ice of the parking lot. It was going to hit the back corner of my truck, and I was standing between them. I didn#39;t even have time to close my eyes. Just before I heard the shattering crunch of the van folding around the truck bed, something hit me, hard, but not from the direction I was expecting. My head cracked against the icy blacktop, and I felt something solid and cold pinning me to the ground. I was lying on the pavement behind the tan car I#39;d parked next to. But I didn#39;t have a chance to notice anything else, because the van was still coming. It had curled gratingly around the end of the truck and, still spinning and sliding, was about to collide with me again. A low oath made me aware that someone was with me, and the voice was impossible not to recognize. Two long, white hands shot out protectively in front of me, and the van shuddered to a stop a foot from my face, the large hands fitting providentially into a deep dent in the side of the van#39;s body. Then his hands moved so fast they blurred. One was suddenly gripping under the body of the van, and something was dragging me, swinging my legs around like a rag doll#39;s, till they hit the tire of the tan car. A groaning metallic thud hurt my ears, and the van settled, glass popping, onto the asphalt — exactly where, a second ago, my legs had been. Article/201205/181929She was 31 years old, a seamstress and the mother of two children. Her husband is a mechanic. On a sunny morning, Vicky was walking to work. While in the crosswalk at Wilshire and Hamilton near Koreatown, Vicky was run over by a yellow school bus. An eyewitness said that the driver was laughing and talking on his cell phone. The bus was empty. Instead of stopping, the driver continued driving as if nothing had happened.“How could he just drive away?” said the witness. “I ran over there to help the woman. She was quiet and still. There was a little blood under her nose. I thought she was just unconscious. The paramedics arrived; they tried to revive her, but then they just covered her body with a sheet. One of them said that she probably died instantly.”Police had to notify Vicky’s husband. He and Vicky had been in love since they were 16. His parents are dead; Vicky’s parents live in her home country. He is now without his wife and his best friend. Their tenth anniversary was only a week away. Their plans for a house and a future were now finished. After dealing with his own grief, he had to somehow present the terrible news to their two children. The police found the bus parked a few blocks from the accident scene. The driver was gone. He had been transporting people to the annual Earth Day festival in Koreatown. About 30,000 people usually attend this event. A police spokesman said that the driver would be charged with murder. “If we could charge him with ‘destroying a happy family,’ we’d do that, too,” the spokesman said. Article/201108/149022

I wonder if there is anyone in the world who never lies. Not even a small white lie. It seems everyone lies at some point in their life, or their day. Some people are better liars than others. In fact, I often lying is an art. Children are pretty good at lying. Or perhaps they’re pretty bad, because it’s easy to tell when a child is lying. I that the more lies children tell, the more intelligent they are. You need to be creative and imaginative to lie. There comes a stage in our lives when most of us stop lying. We are all told that it’s always better to tell the truth. Not all of us do this though. There are many very intelligent people who lie. We even trust them to run our country. I’ve lost count of the number of politicians who have been caught lying. Article/201105/137723

One day the three young people went for a walk while the old man rested. When they had gone, I went to the door of the house and knocked on it. The old man told me to enter, and to sit down. ;Thank you,; I said.;I am a traveller, and I#39;m tired and sad. I have no family or friends. The people that I want to have as my friends have never seen me.If they don#39;t take me into their home, I shall be alone in the world.;“谢谢您,”我说道。 ;Don#39;t be so sad,; the old man said.;You will find that the hearts of men are full of love. If these friends are good people, they will welcome you.;“不要这样悲伤。” ;They are kind, and the best people in the world,; I said.;But when they meet me, they may not see a kind creature who has helped them. Instead they may see a monster, and they will hate me.;“他们很善良,是世界上最好的人,”我说道,“可是当他们遇见我时,他们就看不出我是一个曾帮助过他们的善良的人了。 ;That mustn#39;t happen,;the old man said.;My family and I have had our difficult times, and we#39;ll help you.;“不会这样的。” ;You are a very good man,; I said,;and if you help me, I shall be able to live with my friends and enjoy their love.;“你真是个好人。” At that moment I heard the young people returning from their walk.I caught the old man#39;s hand, and cried,;Now is the time!Save me and help me! You and your family are the friends that I am talking about.;就在那时,我听到那些年轻人散步归来。 Then the door opened, and in came Felix, Sophie, and Agatha.Their faces were filled with horror and fear when they saw me.Agatha fainted, and Sophie ran out of the house.Felix ran forward and pulled me away from his father. He threw me to the ground and hit me again and again with his heavy stick.I did not lift a hand against him.I did not want to hurt him—or any of them. My heart was heavy, and all hope left me. I ran out of the house and later returned silently to my hut. Nobody saw me. /201205/182154
