Both Samsung and BlackBerry quickly put the kibosh on a report Wednesday afternoon that the two are engaged in takeover talks. But why would the world’s biggest smartphone company pay a rumored .5 billion for a Canadian tech company whose glory days are past? Answer: Its rich intellectual property portfolio—especially all its juicy security innovations. The excitement was triggered by a Reuters story that cited documents about the potential transaction as the source of its information. Samsung actually has made at least one play for BlackBerry BBRY -19.77% before, in 2012. As to this latest rumor, the alleged takeover target was the first to refute that a deal is in the works. “BlackBerry has not engaged in discussions with Samsung with respect to any possible offer to purchase BlackBerry,” the company said in a statement issued Wednesday afternoon. “BlackBerry’s policy is not to comment on rumors or speculation, and accordingly it does not intend to comment further.” Samsung’s comment was shorter: “Media reports of the acquisition are groundless.” At the center of the speculation is BlackBerry’s healthy intellectual property portfolio, 44,000 patents and still growing. Last October, for example, the company won at least 27 new ones—covering everything from conference-calling interfaces to touch screens to security features for wearable technologies such as smart watches, eyeglasses and fitness bands. Security continues to be BlackBerry’s biggest selling point with businesses. Just ask the Sony movie studio division, which “resorted” to outdated BlackBerrys to restart communications after its security breach last Thanksgiving. Although it looked like the mobile patent wars might cool off after several settlements late in 2014, this year kicked off with a skirmish between Apple and Ericsson over patent royalties related to wireless communications. BlackBerry used to be pretty litigious: It even took on celebrity Ryan Seacrest over its keyboard! But these days it is more focused on trying to convince smartphone buyers that its technology is cool again. Or at least relevant. Whether or not any sort of BlackBerry-Samsung deal actually happens, the development highlights next wave of innovation (and litigation) in mobile technology: one centered on access control methods and containing corporate breachesin an increasingly mobile world. (财富中文网) /201501/355694AT dinner with friends recently the conversation turned to things that were stressing us out. Yes, it was one of those moody evenings. But it ended up being upbeat because someone asked the inevitable “I wonder if there’s an app for that” question. And it turns out there are lots of apps to help you think positively or aim at happiness, and we all had fun examining them on our phones. Happify is perhaps the most sophisticated positive vibes app available now. The idea of this free iOS app is to train you into thinking positively and feeling happy by engaging you in various “tracks” with different goals like improving your confidence or seeing new possibilities. By playing through games and activities for a few minutes each day, the aim is to ultimately get into the habit of thinking positively. Happify, which claims its technique is based on science, starts by asking you some thought-provoking questions about your life and your goals in using the app. Then it recommends some tracks for you, and within a few taps you’ve begun. Each track contains bite-size quizzes, games and activities that guide you to seeing more positive aspects of your daily life. For example, one may ask you to list things you’re grateful for at home, another will get you to notice positive words in a game where you lose points by clicking on negative words. The app also regularly helps you assess your happiness level, that way pointing out how you can feel more positive merely by changing your habits. There’s also a community page in the app where you can see inspirational comments by other users and even upload your own — though you don’t have to use this page. The app is fun and definitely draws my attention to the happier side of life. Perhaps Happify’s only drawback is that while it’s free to download and use, access to its full range of activities costs a month or a year. It’s also only for iOS devices. Other apps use a different route to developing positive thinking habits: repeated affirmation. These apps simply expose you repeatedly to motivational ideas, es and suggestions. On iOS, Positive Thinking by TapCoder.com is a relatively simple attempt at this kind of app. It uses colorful imagery and very simple controls, and has a list of motivational es and suggestions — everything from “do sports” to “stop thinking ... sit there relaxed.” The app can even pop a motivational notification on your screen automatically at certain times if you choose. It’s extremely basic, and there’s not a huge amount of content but you may find it has some good ideas and it is free. On Android the app Positive Thinking by Juniper Islet has a very similar goal, but offers extras like being able to add your own motivational es to its archive and to push es onto an Android widget so you can them without opening the app. It’s also free. Another approach to thinking positively is to track your moods so you can either notice what makes you feel glum or simply be more aware of when you think positively. The app iMoodJournal on iOS, which costs , is sophisticated and has a great-looking, easy-to-use interface. Through a suite of s and text-entry controls you can make a diary-style note in the app of when you’re feeling positive (or not!), and also add a photo or a selfie. When you’ve accumulated enough entries, the app presents some analytics in the form of graphs that show your positivity over time. This could help you plan strategies to be more positive. The T2 Mood Tracker app is a rough equivalent on Android, and has a few neat extras like letting you enter your own parameters to measure on a sliding scale so you could add very specific sensations or events that are meaningful to your emotional state. It’s free, and is also available for iOS devices.T2情绪跟踪器(T2 Mood Tracker)是一款适用于Android系统的类似应用。 If you prefer a more meditative approach to positive thinking, check out Smiling Mind, a free iOS and Android app. You enter data on how you’re feeling, using a number of slide controls that ask if you’re feeling “stormy” or “calm,” for example. Then you listen to a meditation-like voice track that talks you through different programs. Depending on the goal of the program, like breathing control or body awareness, each track asks you to think about your habits or past in different ways. Clearly meditation is a very personal experience, and your mileage may vary, but I found the app fascinating and relaxing. Reflect+ is a new special effects app for iOS devices that quickly and easily transforms ordinary snaps into magical images by adding a fake reflection effect. It’s as if the subject of the original photo were at the edge of a lake or ocean, or even a sheet of ice or metal. Fun, and just .Reflect+是一款适用于iOS设备的新特效应用,可以通过使用假反射效果,快速、轻松地将一张普通的照片变成神奇的图像,使原始照片中的物体看起来像是在湖边或者海边,甚至是一片冰面或者金属的旁边。 /201412/345441Sina Weibo will remove its 140-character limit starting Jan. 28 on its developer platform, its CEO confirmed on Wednesday. The change came after media reported that U.S. microblogging platform Twitter is considering removing its own 140-character limit, considered an iconic feature of the social media tool. On Wednesday, a snapshot of a letter from Weibo Open Platform to its developers was widely circulated on Weibo, where it said the new format is expected to be tested among ;senior users; from Jan. 28 and open to all users by Feb. 28. Weibo CEO Wang Gaofei reposted the snapshot on his personal account under the user name ;Laiquzhijian.;周三,一封微开放平台致内部开发者的信件截图在微上广泛流传,信件称新格式预计于本月28日对会员开放试用权限,于2月28日对全部用户开放。 In his retweet, Wang stressed that during the pilot run, only 140 characters will be displayed in followers#39; feeds and a link will appear to show the entire content if a post exceeds the character limit. China#39;s Sina Weibo boasts over 200 million active users, according to its financial report in 2015. Twitter#39;s rumored plan to remove its character limit has been fiercely debated on social media, but the company has yet to confirm it. /201601/423697You#39;re watching the latest season of Orange is the New Black on Netflix when, all of a sudden, the jerks to a stop—and the endless buffering begins. It#39;s frustrating when your network slows down, but there are a few tricks you can use boost your Wi-Fi signal. 1.DON#39;T HIDE YOUR ROUTER.1. Most people hide their routers because they#39;re unsightly or in the way, but placing a router in a closet is a one-way ticket to slow Wi-Fi: Walls and doors can degrade and absorb signal strength. Find a central location in your home and put your router on a table or bookshelf. Because some routers are designed to project a Wi-Fi signal slightly downward, keeping it higher off the ground will evenly distribute a Wi-Fi signal throughout your home. 2.STAY AWAY FROM APPLIANCES AND METAL OBJECTS.2. Microwaves, cordless telephones, flourescent lights, and even other routers may interfere with your Wi-Fi signal.Place your router away from household appliances and set it to a different wireless channel and frequency. You should also avoid placing your router near metal objects, which can absorb signal strength. 3.RESET ON A SCHEDULE3. A majority of tech support problems can be cleared up by simply resetting or rebooting your router or modem on a regular basis. And if you buy an outlet timer, set the timer to reset your router once a day at an off-peak time. 4.UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE4. Running firmware updates is annoying and time consuming. But if you have an older router, those updates ensure your router#39;s software is running at its best and most efficient. It#39;s best to buy a new router every seven or eight years. 5.ADJUST YOUR ROUTER#39;S ANTENNAS.5. Most routers have two adjustable antennas on top. If yours are parallel, it#39;s time to switch things up and go perpendicular. Wi-Fi works best when signals are parallel to a device#39;s internal antenna, which are horizontal in laptops and vertical in desktop computers. Internal antennas vary in mobile devices, depending on how you#39;re holding them (in portrait or landscape mode). Keeping a router#39;s antennas perpendicular to each other will ensure a solid connection between your home network and your smartphones and laptops. 6.USE BEER CANS6. The aluminum in beer reflects and extend the signal farther than the router itself. Remove the pop top and cut around the bottom of the can to remove it. Repeat the process for the top of the can, just below the mouth, but don#39;t cut all the way around—make sure the mouth of the can is still attached. Then, from the bottom, cut down the middle of the can. Fan out the flaps to create a curve or parabola and turn the can upside down to stand it up. Stick one of the router#39;s antennas through the mouth of the beer can and use a small piece of duct tape or blu-tack to keep it in place, then repeat the process for the other antenna. Although your router might look messy, your signal strength should greatly improve. 7.PASSWORD-PROTECT YOUR NETWORK7. Because home Wi-Fi speeds are dependent on how many people are using it at one time, a strong password is key: It will ensure that only authorized people are using your network. Select a password that is a hard-to-figure-out combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. 8.AND STGER HEAVY BANDWIDTH USEE8. If too many people on your home network are using heavy bandwidth at the same time, like playing online games, watching Netflix, and downloading movies and music from iTunes, then your entire network will slow down for everyone. 9.BUY A REPEATER9. Most routers have a range of about 150 feet. The easiest fix to boost the signal in those rooms is to buy a Wi-Fi repeater, which can plug into any wall outlet and will increases a signal#39;s range and strength. /201510/406836

They say Jan. 18 — or Blue Monday — is the most depressing day of the year, but they#39;re wrong. The most depressing day of the year is today, because you#39;re about to find out how and when you#39;re most likely to die. Statistician Nathan Yau has created an interactive chart to determine, in his words, ;how and when you will die, given your sex, race and age.; Fun! To create his chart, Yau used data from the CDC#39;s Underlying Cause of Death Database, a rather bleak collection of US death statistics from 1999 to 2014. Using information obtained from Americans#39; death certificates, the database catalogs deaths based on age, race, gender, year and cause of death, among other metrics. Once you enter your sex, race and age, the chart will kick into motion. For each year past your current age, it#39;ll show you how likely you are to die of various common causes of death: infection, cancer, blood, endocrine, mental, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, musculoskeletal, genitourinary, perinatal, congenital and external causes. For every year past your current age, the chart will also show you the likeliness of having died by that point. The main point, which is what you#39;d expect, is that mortality rate is much lower in the earlier years of life than in the older years. But, if you do die at a younger age, it#39;s much more likely due to something external rather than a disease. You can also look at it the other way. Shift age to the older years, and let the simulations run. You#39;re much more likely to die of a disease rather than something external. Shift past 80 years, and it#39;s over 40% chance the cause will be circulatory, regardless of demographic group. 40%。I tried the chart out for myself, a 24-year-old white female. If I die two years from now, at 26, there#39;s hardly any chance it#39;ll be from health problems — and a very high likelihood it#39;ll be from external causes. At 50 years old, there#39;s a 95% chance I#39;ll still be alive — that#39;s still pretty good! If I do happen to die at 50, it#39;ll most likely be from circulatory problems, cancer, infection or external causes. Finally, here I am at 80. Now, there#39;s only a 52% chance I#39;ll still be alive. If I die, the most likely causes will be circulatory, cancer and endocrine. Yau was surprised to see that circulatory problems — and not cancer — were such a prominent cause of death. ;It seems like cancer would be the leading cause, just going off general news,; he wrote. ;This is certainly true up to a certain age, but get past that and your heart can only keep going for so long.;他写道:“根据各大新闻的报道,人们似乎一直认为癌症才是头号杀手。
